I agree that religion is constantly evolving and changing, for example early Islam did not ban sculptures and paintings, actually there were quite a few of them inside some of the early mosques but this trend started to change after the Islamic culture got infused with the early Jewish converts to Islam, which at the time believed that sculptures and paintings were sacrilegious, so religion isn't constant it gets; shall I say customized to the cultures of the people who embrace it, not to mention the pagan influence on the early Christian culture and how Christ's Birth date was altered to accommodate existing pagan festivals so that it becomes easier to attract more converts to the (at the time)new religion.
