I'll just add that in JFK Terminal 4 departures (New York, 9/11, ...)
Your luggage is put in the x-ray machinethat feeds the lugguage belt after you get your boarding card (Business and First class get it carried from them).
The only security check is right after the passport check, and you immediately board the plane after that, even duty free is before all that, in the open.
