Having worked as a veterinary technician, I can assure you that declawing a cat is a horrible surgery.

Have you seen the nail cutters that are used for dogs nails - the ones that look like a hand-held guillotine? The cat's paw is gently "squished open" by hand (like you would to see the cat's claws) and then the nail cutters literally decapitates the last bony digit of the toe.

Look down at your foot and you'll see the last bony joint of your toe - the one that your toenail is attached to. THAT is what is cut off. Now imagine how painful it would be. . .and imagine trying to walk/run after having that joint amputated. . .or trying to escape from a predator with the now-mutilated feet.
