AMD had the upper hand in performance over Intel until 2006. Sempron was better than Celeron and Athlon was better than the Pentium chips. Even in dual core processors AMD was better until the Core 2 Duo arrived from Intel.
Core 2 Duo processors consume less power and are faster than comparable processors from AMD. They are also real 64-bit processors.
