too that I sniff vegetables - potatoes especially, for freshness, and some fruit you can sniff for ripeness but meat is a problem. Most of the minced beef in supermarkets is just 'on the turn' I would say, lamb fares better, but what's going on with the chicken pieces that look like they have been in the bath too long - top layer of flesh is pale and crinkly? Dread to think what causes that. Probably all left out in the heat too long.
