I went to New England once. I thought I was back in the days of Prohibition. One State (New Hampshire, I think it was?) you could only by alcohol for personal consumption from a warehouse the other side of the State border to take it in!
At the Hotel on Mt Washington I couldn't find the bar!!! There WAS a hole in the wall, and when I poked my head through the slot and asked for a double vodka, this middle aged hippy ( newly arrived back in US from about 20 years in Ibiza) said 'I can't do that ma'am it's against the law here, but I can pour you a large shot'. hehehe He was a nice guy, we chatted to him for quite a while.
