What health hazards are you talking about? I know hundreds and hundreds of people back home with older kids who have had pets around their children since they were babies, and they have never been sick. I was bought up with cats and dogs around me and have never been ill.
I've never heard anything so crazy...

I guess it's different thinking in this part of the world, a lot of people see animals as dirty mongrels.
