I had just typed a reply to that same extent when my computer froze. Adoption in most western cultures is due to neglect, abuse abandonement, or voluntary adoption at birth. In most Eastern cultures it is due to poverty or death of the parents. The lineage in eastern cultures are very important to the people (tribal links/cultural identity. In our cases most western cultures are such a mixture we very rarely go back more than a few generation when looking at our family lineage.

The interpretations or Fatwas that many Islamic scholars will give will be based on the rules set in the Quran or Hadith however they will also take into consideration the individuals conditions or the context. The rules given in the Quran were for a condition that existed at that time in the society( i.e. the context Hussam gave). I am certain that most scholars would not say it was wrong for you to change the childs name if it was done to protect the child from harm.

A lot of people don't realize the rules are there in the Quran as a guide but you also have to know the context or the reason for the rule. If the context does not fit the rule you can not apply the rule without taking this into account. The mistake many Muslims and non Muslims make when reading rulings from the Quran or even seeking Fatwas from Islamic scholars. The context is so important when applying the rules and regulations. The beauty of Islam is that it allows for the flexibility based on the conditions.
