Further to what Apple explained, and I believe she explained it very good and clear, Muslims are not allowed to live or even exist with another opposite gender alone (a man exists with woman or a woman with a man in privacy).
In other words, conclave with people who are eligible to have sexual relation with them is unlawful and forbidden in Islam (it should be cleared by itself in another topic).
When you have a child (either boy or girl) sooner or later they will turned to be an adult, and they are not actually your sons or daughters, as they are not from your blood.
In Islam, they are considered strangers and not part of your first class relatives. That means the father can marry the girl, and the same with the mother and the adopted son.
However, both mother and father can take care any of the adopted kids without changing their names or living with them as real sons and daughters.
