Ivanhoe - I'm surprised you asked that last question - we are the biosphere's killers a la supreme!! granted not every human is a killer - but a hell of a lot are (just like dogs and other domesticated carnivores).
Your comments on treatment of animals are true but it's not the whole story - I agree with you that treatment has a lot to do with it - BUT - I repeat there are plenty of documented instances of the family German Shepherd or Dobermann or whatever and which has always been well treated suddenly an unexplicably turning on its master or nearby children. These are facts Ivanhoe.
Incidentally I think you will find that humans are classed as omnivores - we can live without meat or with it. We don't - or at least most of us - don't salivate at the sight of a piece of raw flesh like a carnivore does - nor do we rip living prey apart and consume them raw.
