You wouldn't have felt sorry for the rtas in the 80's. They climbed walls (thats why smooth render only is used on new properties). Every time the car headlight went on at night you picked up 6 or 7 rats in the beam. The worst place was where the KFC is now on Al-Saad.
The government brought in a specialist (Danish I think) who introduced a poison that killed the rats but didn't harm doemestic animals or humans (something about them not having the K factor as there were few drains).
To prove that it didn't hurt humans he ate a fist full on TV and came to no harm.
We had a rat problem at the villa. They came under tha gate, under the water tank and down a rathole in the garden. Suddenly they disappeared. We thought our cats had got rid of them but they hadn't. We found later that we had a cobra living under the water tank. The eggs were in some soil that came in from Pakistan and hatched out in the heat.
