yes, els, it is an devastating event...but who is it to blame, the person who commits suicide and takes the innocent lives of ther children with her, or the family who did not spot the signs of severe depression in the first place?

We must not forget that severe PPD and subsequently PPPsicosis are mental illnesses that make a mother incapable of taking care of her children, and the father and inmediate family must intervene before the illness gets any worse. These things, just as any other mental disease such as squitzofrenia (sp?) or bipolar do not come suddenly. THere are months or bizarre behaviour preceding an accute onset of psicosis.

Whilst a moderate postpartum depression is only normal and happens to a high percentage of new mums (not me, I was over the moon!!!) a depression that last for a long time and is left untreated is somenthing that the family must take very seriously and seek medical help. And do not forget that the mohter is severely incapacitated by her illness.
