I'm not sure what bomb explosion you heard about, but got the feeling you might be refering to a suicide bomber attack that took place in a theatre in Doha 10 months ago or so. One british citizen and the bomber himself died.
The fact is, Qatar, despite its ties with the USA, is not an Al Qaeda (sp?) target. There are sources that claim that Qatar goverment gives large amounts of money to Al qaeda in order to be protected from terrorist attacks.
So, no bombs here! Unless Bush decides to bomb Al Jazeera, which I hope, won't happen.
Doha is a fairy safe place in all respects. Crime rates are very low, although don't believe whoever tells you that crime is non-existent! Most building blocks and Compounds have security. When you walk alone you will feel extremely uncofortable, but rest assured you will not be assaulted.
The main danger in Doha is "Road unsafety". But this, you will see when you get here. I'm so terrified of driving here I might give it up all together.
