Road Cycling Safety Issue - gulley covers

trog
By trog

I recently started cycling to work (some call me mad but my choice!). I have noticed a lot of the road gulley drain covers have been incorrectly installed with the slots parallel to the kerb. This means it is easy for your wheel to fall in. I have been "lifting" the front end of the bike at the ones I see, if I can't avoid them, to reduce that risk. It could destabilise a bike causing the rider to fall off into the traffic. It is a significant safety hazard.
Is anyone aware of any cyclist having fallen foul of these covers? Does anyone know which authority I should contact to get them re-set correctly? Is there a road maintenance authority in Qatar? (do they deal with pot holes as well?). Do I have a chance in hell? Am I too much a dreamer to assume I can get such things sorted before someone gets killed?
Is this something The Press would be interested in?
Regards,
"Trog"

Actually in Germany it is the same. Lines parallel to the pedestrian pavement. I still remember that time the frontwheel got stuck and my balls hit the steering wheel rod

I think the look of blank astonishment which would meet your ideas would speak for itself.

Cyclists here are generally seen as the poorest of the poor expats - and therefore not a group to be taken in any ways seriously. I'm not saying your point of view is wrong, but your "expectation" that your complaint will be taken seriously (even if it is in the press, which is also tightly controlled) is unfortunately, almost laughable.

Cars/SUVs are king here and will remain so for so long as it is cheaper and EASIER to get around (and by easier, no physical exertion is required). I think much of the GCC could be a great "walkable" place to live, but pedestrians are treated as badly as cyclists.

So while the climate (for 6 - 8 months of the year) is conducive to moderate outdoor (and healthy) physical activity (i.e. cycling and walking) until the road traffic authority and urban planners recognize it as such (and are egged on by health authorities - obesity and diabetes and heart problems here are epidemic - mostly because of lack of exercise) nothing will change.

I think the best bet would be to take a "general" health approach to changing not only the grates but overall pedestrian and cycling awareness would be a better idea.

But, having seen the cars circling in the mall parking lots to get a space close to the doors (goodness, we wouldn't have to walk to go walking around and shopping would we!!) I won't hold my breath.

I would really love to see the face of that Ashghal employee when you tell him about the slots, drain covers, the wheel of your bicycle, you going cycling to work, and how people can get injured !!!!

Do you seriously think that Asghgal would mobilize a team to reset the drain cover so the front wheel of your bicycle won’t get stuck on the slots that are parallel to the pavement.

Obviously, you haven’t been here long enough.

Do you know that it takes Ashghal years to finish a six month job ??!!?? Do you realize how many roads they will close and how much traffic they will create if they decide to do what you are asking them? Do you have any idea how many people will get injured because of the unnecessarily closed roads and road diversions ?

Please do us all a favor and don’t speak to Ashghal. Don’t speak to anybody about this subject.

well yes there is a road maintenance authority, belongs to Ashghal, they assign contractors to rehabilitate roads including resurfacing and utilities.

quality? i think where you've cycled is a fresh rehabilitated road, so don't bother.

Yalla!

The drain covers are installed that way at home, too. And yes, I've certainly gone down before I learned to go around them. Not sure who you can appeal to. I think that if you take the same route often enough, you will learn where they all are and will figure your way around them.

Kudos to you on cycling to work!
