Fresh after winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2015 Men’s Handball World Championship bids, Qatar is targeting yet another prestigious global event – the 2017 IAAF World Championships in
Athletics.
“Yes, Qatar is preparing a bid for the World Championships in Athletics in 2017,” a Qatar Olympic Committee spokesman told the Gulf Times yesterday.
“The decision to bid for the event was being discussed over the past few months but now it has been confirmed,” he added.
In December 2010, Qatar beat Australia, the US, Japan and South Korea to land the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the first time the world’s premier sporting event would be hosted in the Middle East.
And last month, Qatar defeated France, Norway and Poland to win the 2015 men’s handball World Championship, another first for the region.
Qatar is a regional pioneer in athletics and was the first country in the Gulf to host a Grand Prix 12 years ago.
Doha last year hosted the inaugural IAAF Diamond League as well as the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics.
But the IAAF Championships in Athletics, held outdoors every two years, is the most prestigious of all track and field events and attracts all the big names in the sport.
This year, the worlds will be held in Daegu, South Korea, while Moscow is scheduled to host the event in 2013 and Beijing next in 2015.
Istanbul, London and Rome are also reportedly mulling bids for the 2017 event.

LincolnPirate,

In this region, the distance between (the artist-impressions and the arrogant overconfident project announcements) and (the actual reality) is millions of light-years!

This is good news!

They will need to get the infrastructure for this in place by 2016, meaning that when projects run 5 years late they will be ready by 2022 :o)
