Khalifa Stadium set for major makeover
The iconic Khalifa International Stadium, which hosted several high-profile football games and splendid ceremonies, including that of the 2006 Asian Games, is ready for a major makeover.
Aspire Logistics, in co-ordination with the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, will start refurbishing the stadium as one of the proposed venues for the ’22 FIFA World Cup soon after the Emir’s Cup final, to be played on May 17.
The new structure will also house the proposed 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, with its iconic design set to be one of the main future attractions.
The museum will also be the final destination of the ‘We Speak Football’ exhibition, which tours the world from this year until ’22, starting in Brazil and ending in Doha to coincide with the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
To build enthusiasm around the FIFA World Cup, the ‘We Speak Football’ exhibition will also showcase precious items from the National Football Museum in Manchester, England.
FIFA guidelines require the layout and seating of the Khalifa International Stadium to be modified. Incorporating the museum into its structure will give it a change of look as well. More of an Olympic stadium now, it will be reshaped as a state-of-the-art football venue, as per the needs of the football family.
