Filipino Wrecking Machine for UFC 112
An intriguing matchup is set to take place on Yas Island when Kendall “Da Spyda” Grove takes on “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Mark Munoz.
The Maui, Hawai’i native Kendall Grove is the season three winner of “The Ultimate Fighter” and a jiu jitsu and muay thai specialist. He has trained with such UFC champions as Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz and now continues his professional development with lightweight champ and fellow Hawaiian BJ Penn. “Da Spyda” has become a complete mixed martial artist and is able to win either by knockout or submission as his record clearly indicates. He is a charismatic young man and knows how to have fun inside the cage. Kendall Grove is looking to continue his climb up the middleweight ladder. I expect him to use his 6’6” frame to keep his opponent, a decorated wrestler, at bay.
When I say decorated I am referring to two California high school state championships, a national high school wrestling title, two Big 12 titles, back to back All-American honors, the first Filipino-American to win a Division I championship and is scheduled to be inducted into the California State Wrestling Hall of Fame in May 2010. In his UFC debut Munoz suffered a first round knockout loss to Matt Hamill. Since then “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” as grabbed back to back victories and is looking to establish himself as a force to be reckoned with in the 185 pound division.
What is more interesting is that despite both fighters’ phenomenal ground skills, they choose to stand up and test their striking skills. These gentlemen know how to put on a show and understand that the fans are the most important part of the sport. I expect fireworks from these two in April. I might even have to bring my sunglasses.
