Hi, i live in australia and breed shetland ponies. Recently i was contacted by an agent working for a group who wish to buy australian ponies to import to Qatar. I was told they were for use as childrens ponies and also for breeding purposes. I was wondering if anybody could tell me more informatin about life in Qatar for horse/ponies. And would anybody be able to attatch pictures,as i would like to find out more about Qatar.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just want to say that Cavileer has it spot on. Make sure that you totally research who wants the horses etc.

I'm the lady mentioned by moonbeam, ie rescue horses in Qatar. The first one, Max is kept in a covered stables with no A/Cs which is what he has been used to for a very long time. He is on a farm that is surrounded by lots of trees so there is nearly always a breeze (even in the hot summer) The other horse I work with is a TB (ex racehorse) and during the summer he is kept in stables with A/Cs and wintered in non A/C stables. There is actually a shetland where the TB is stabled and he seems very content.

Cavileer is also right that some horses are kept in the lap of luxury. Research is the key here.

Hope that helps :)

Hi Sonnygal

Just logged on for the first time in ages and came across your queiry.

As someone mentioned above it really depends on who is purchasing the horses/ponies/animals. Whilst it is true that many will keep their animals in airconditioning in the hottest part of the year and provide outstanding care to their animals, there are plenty of ignorant horse owners here who both a) really have little idea of what is needed for basic feeding, housing and health requirements for their charges and b) who leave their horses in the hands of unqualified inexperienced grooms who themselves have little idea of how to treat or take care of them.

So my advice to you is simply do your research on who wants it, why they want it, what sort of life they can offer it etc. Unfortunately as someone stated above there is a high case of abandonment here. I know horses who have been injured at some point and who have then lived out the rest of their miserable lives in a stable with cement floor for bedding and a diet of pure oats, so all is not always as good as it is cracked up to be here in terms of animal welfare.

Having said that if you find a good owner, then many horses here live in the lap of luxury. At one farm of race horses for example, they live in airconditioned barns, with huge grass paddocks, fresh home grown alfalfa, vet surgeons on permanent staff etc.

In terms of other breeds of horses, some of the riding schools have numerous ponies on hand however I am unsure of the actual breeds. Typically the majority of the horse population here is Arabian, Thoroughbreds and numerous Warmbloods.

I know there is a riding school currently renovating and building a new facility. They are looking for school horses from what I gather. If it is the same organization as this, then you could expect a high level of care for the ponies.

Goodluck and I hope this gives you some extra information that might help you.

Cheers Cav

Hi, I'm no expert on the matter but I'm assuming Shetland ponies originate from Shetland way up north of Scotland in the middle of the North Sea. Bear in mind the temperatures in Qatar are vastly different from Oz, it can reach up to 50C and has a high humidity.

somewhere in Al Rayyan area there is a ponny stables ... most of my friend been there with the kiddies (and 6 yrs here i never been to the place). You can take the kids for a ride ... something like 30 QR for half an hour. Apparently this ponny place was famous among mums for somewhere to go with kids ... I wonder wether your ponny will go to the same place?

Gypsy is correct for the most part. The wealthy owners by large do treat their horses well. More emphasis is put on Arab and Arabian breeding for show or racing. Sadly there are horses here that outlive their usefulness in the eyes of their owners and get abandoned. You should contact the lady that runs http://adogslifeqatar.blogspot.com/

she actually rescued a couple of horses here.

My suggestion is that you verify who these animals will go to and that they guarantee proper facilities.

Qatar is known world wide for its horses and horse breeding. Qataris love horses and treat them very well for the most part. There are many many horses here and most of them live better then the people in beautiful air conditioned stables. There is only about 3 months out of the year that you would have to worry about them being in extreme heat conditions, and during those times, from what I can see, they would be indoors.

Thanks for the quick reply!!! The lady just contacted me today so i am busily searching for information! Are there ponies/horses in Qatar? They are asking for ponies that are well handled with even tempraments and are suitable fro riding. what is the environment like for horses/ponies in Qatar? I was worried about the ponies going over at this time of year as currently it is very cold here (probable max temp of 10degrees! and snow)

Thanks again, very much appreciated

I think Qatar is the wrong place for Shetland Ponys. It is to hot and humid for them.Myself i would never bring a Shetty to Qatar. Also if they are verry sweet and cute for kids, but they are animals and not playtoys for kids. And sometimes not easy to handle because they have theyr own strong mind.
