QL Recommends: Board Games you can play when staying home amid the COVID-19 pandemic
If you're one like us and staying home by practicing social distancing to flatten the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) curve, we are sure you're looking for ways to keep yourself entertained.
Why not make use of this time and connect with your family members over non-digitized games? Yes, it is time to bring the board game action back! While some of you may already be board game fans, we though some of our team favorites may help you make a pick to pass time.
Read up below to know what board games some of our QL team members love and why so:
Shaun (Head of Content) recommends Monopoly
"I love Monopoly! It’s my favorite game from childhood and reminds me of family bonding time. Ideally suited for 4 players, it’s always difficult to find enough people to stay committed for the entire duration of the game (especially if they hate losing!)," says Shaun.
"I’ve become a Monopoly collector over the years picking up every cool edition I see through my travels. The basic concept of Monopoly is to become the ultimate property mogul. Mmm... I wonder if we can get the QL Properties team to release their own edition?" Shaun adds.
Minimum age: 8
Players: 2 or more
Skills required: Negotiation, resource management, money handling, strategy
Noor (PR and Marketing Manager) recommends Snakes & Ladders
"I used to play this game as a kid with my family. Apart from the nostalgic factor, it's simple and easy for children to understand the concept," says Noor.
It can also be a fun learning exercise for children, Noor adds since there's a lot of addition and subtraction involved.
"Win or lose, this game is a ton of fun."
How to play:
- Each player puts their play piece on the space that says 'start here'.
- Take it in turns to roll the dice. Move your piece forward the number of spaces shown on the dice.
- If your piece lands at the bottom of a ladder, you can move up to the top of the ladder.
- If your piece lands on the head of a snake, you must slide down to the bottom of the snake.
- The first player to get to the space that says 'home' is the winner.
Minimum age: 4
Players: 2 or more
Skills required: Counting, observation
Ismat (Content Producer) recommends Ticket to Ride: Europe
Ticket to Ride Europe takes you on a train adventure in which players collect and play matching train cards to connect railway routes across Europe, Ismat explains.
Will you risk a trip through the dark tunnels of Switzerland? Or erect lavish train stations in the great capitals of the old empire? Your next move might just make you Europe's greatest train magnate!
"It's my favorite board game because it appeals to both families and experienced gamers, and it only takes 30-60 minutes to play," she adds.
Minimum age: 8
Players: 2-5
Skills required: Strategy
Basil (Video Producer) recommends Ludo
Ludo is a strategy board game for two to four players, in which the players race their four tokens from start to finish according to the rolls of a single die.
"This game is really exciting because anyone can learn as they play (the rules are really simple). This board game is so addictive that there are even app versions on it to play on your phone (yes, with friends too!). You can easily spend hours playing it (I have)," says Basil.
Minimum age: 4
Players: 2-4
Skills required: Strategy, tactics, counting, probability
Becca (Graphic Designer) recommends Scrabble
"Scrabble was one of my favorite games to play growing up. My family would always set up an intensely competitive Scrabble game on weekends where half the round is just us arguing over what counts and what doesn’t (Google wasn’t so popular back then). These games helped with improving my English skills and got my creative juices flowing," says Becca.
She encourages you to blow off the dust from your Scrabble board game sitting in the cupboard tonight and enjoy a non-digital game with your family.
Minimum age: 8
Players: 2-4
Skills required: Vocabulary, spelling, anagramming
