Qatar cracks down on fake and counterfeit products
A huge quantity of fake and counterfeit products that violated intellectual property rights were seized in Doha on Sunday.
This was part of a five-day operation that resulted in cases registered against 147 people, after shops, stores and warehouses in Qatar were raided.
The Shaheen operation was carried out by the Ministry of Interior’s Arab and International Police Communication Department in co-operation with Interpol.
It was launched in the wake of the Interpol Regional Programme to Counter Trafficking in Illicit Goods and Intellectual Property Crimes held in Doha last week.
Among the products seized during the raids were 51,000 electrical items, including lights, electric welding ribbons and fuses; 20,000 fake auto spare parts including tyres, brake pads and air filters.
Expired food items with manipulated validity dates were also siezed, together with 4,000 litres of sterilisation gels which expired two years ago and were originally meant for hospital use.
A large number of counterfeit audio and video products, as well as some computers, printers and mobile phones were also seized during the campaign.
Interpol Mena co-ordinator and operations officer Aiham Yasmeenia said the Shaheen operation was first of its kind in the region to rein in counterfeit and illicit goods and products. (Gulf Times)
Have you ever been fooled into buying a fake or counterfiet item?
Additionally, many have bought counterfeit iPads and they have a habit of turning up at Walmarts. One lady bought an iPad, but turned out to be a stack of notebooks in the box. One month later, Emilio Pereda bought an iPad from a Walmart in South Florida, but found it to be a plastic slate with stickers when he opened the box. In fairness, it isn’t entirely Walmart’s fault; crooks know that’s where a lot of people shop and they’re after some illicit quick cash. hey police Souq waqif. :D
So they are worried by a couple of fuses and welding ribbons? Someone just needs to go for a walk around souk wakif to see people selling the finest 'Rolex' watches money can buy; QR20.00, not to mention the fake sunglasses.
oh dear. :D
Electrical items, lights, electric welding ribbons and fuses, fake auto spare parts, tyres, brake pads and air filters are at one side ............
My worry is focused at 4,000 litres of '' sterilisation gels '' which expired two years ago ......
