Of Unclejees and Auntyjees

Mom_me
By Mom_me

One unique thing about India is that the moment you marry you become an 'auntyjee'. No, not to the family you marry in - but to the whole country. Personally, I have yet to graduate to an 'aunty' - at the moment I am still a 'bhabhi' (SIL). Typical 'aunty' in India brings the image of a pot bellied sari clad woman stuffing ladoos in her mouth whislt barking orders to anyone from her husband to her maid. Seriously I dread the day I'll be called 'bhenjee' (colloquial for elder sister) or worse 'Amma' (granny) or whatever is the current norm.
On my last trip to India I was appalled to hear a boy in his late 20's with a 'Aada hai chandrama raat aadi' kind of hair(classic song  - It's a half moon night ) , you know the bald kind with the saving grace being frizzled hair growing over and inside the ears, calling my handsome boyish looking hubby who has just a hint of grey on his small sideburn ------ UNCLE !!!! DH happily chided 'Yes Beta(son)' when I had the looks of 'Who you calling Uncle  you you  ...don't know whatever'. I am all for aging gracefully but in my own territory, my own self. No need to remind me, thank you. On a personal level, I am guilty of saying aunty/uncle to the newly weds when I was in college, which always results in an uneasy shift of weight from one leg to other in the couples. I think we Indians need to improve on our vocabulary and find better words to soothe the aching egos of aunties in bloom. My friend  back home who looks a thousand years younger than her age, assures me saying there is a bright side. She says 'beta' to the boys in their late 20's uttering the horrible 'aunty' to her and let them run errands for her !!!. Afterall  an aunty is entitled to some favours beta.....

Mom-me, sorry, if you (or anyone else) feel offended by any of my comments (i'm still searching the one, help me)- it wasn't intended thatway!

you ain't so naïve to start judging whole block of 180 million people thru one person, right?

X is for me to know and.....get the drift?Nah I'm not that age sensitive...yet! Just wanna maintain some virtual mystery (and the Oscar goes too...)lol @ pot bellied..yeah the dreaded image behind every diet! Guess the gap is closing in now what with most women, young and old, being all figure/beauty conscious and dressing up like youngsters too. No one really looks "aunty" like anymore.  So I guess marital status is the deciding factor now..Well that's what I think and I'm gonna stick with this story!!

Mam, dont be so sad, what you can say at the age of 45, definately a boy aged 15 - 20years will call lady as auntee for consideration of respect in a mind but definately he can call a man of this age provided by his look he seems slightly less in age can be called bya name..........but women normally becomes really an auntee atages between 36 - 45 with some exceptions, believe house must agree on this..........................

Being a Sri Lankan and of Indian descent I know what you mean. At times I shrug it off but sometimes decide to be a bit impish too. Like this once a gal was like all "auntie auntie" at me so I sweetly asked her "how old are you?" she was like twenty something so I replied "well I'm only x years old...now why are you calling me auntie?" lol. Yeah and its always to do with being married and having a kid. You become everyone's auntie..grrrrr =D

Happy, am impressed - love the state. I once made the mistake of calling an orriya helper "bhaiya" and he got all red with anger. The revered term is  "babu" (ditto for bengalees). !!!! Amazing India ...

Good advert bytheway, "my handsome boyish looking hubby"- Idea well noted...LOL

another point of puzzle why aunties (i never say so, IMO they're gracefully seasoned gems) or uncles eye for 20’s & get heart broken, why?? (as my friend sharmaji says, ham mar gaye hain kya?..LOL)

Mom_me... I know its in funnies...but when I say to be posted in QLIG guess you can avoid being unnecessarily hit by some adverse comments on a nicely written post from the posters who wouldnt be able to appreciate it (and they wouldnt be wrong either) ..generally I dont like a good post getting into rough hands and though I wouldnt be able to  to comment or even appreciate it there not being a member of QLIG  but still can enjoy the unadulterated fun...
