What to pack

Hoku
By Hoku

I am moving to Qatar as a US government contractor. They are providing me with a furnished apartment. Has anyone out there had living arrangements like this? If so, what should I pack? Also, do I need a coat?

...sorry to get in here so late, but what exactly is the same in Qatar and Germany? If it was the same, my life would be much easier, please let me know ;-)

No it is not my first time overseas just my first time to the middle east. As a female contractor I always try to do my homework before I deploy somewhere.

Scarlett I am not much for cooking so any suggestions on take out and delivery.

because you will be used to cooking with cups and teaspoons..its all metric over here...I had to bring some back last time I went home so i could use my old recipes without having to convert every single one of them

curling irons and just about any other appliance, buy here..however, be aware that alarm clocks that plug in will gain time...there is a variance in the voltage...I got a battery powered one so I can always know what time it ACTUALLY is...

and yes, I know of several places to get pampered...not to worry...just contact me when you arrive.

Well - I have two little kids and my current state of "pampering" is sneaking in a polish while they sleep...There are many spas and salons here. All the nice hotels have them.

Laptop should be OK. I believe most are already set up for different voltages. We brought ours from home. Curling iron and alarm clock - would just buy here. Unless you like a INDIGLO type battery alarm clock. Cannot find a decent one of those ANYWHERE. :)

Scarlett and pwb78 any suggestions on where to go for pedicures, waxing(threading) and getting pampered?

What about my laptop, curling iron and alarm clock? Do I need to get some type of adapter for the outlets?

Yeah - bring a eggcrate or something. Having to use an extra comforter under the sheets for padding. :) Coat would be good because it does get windy and chilly. Might want to buy a small heater when you get here. Too much tile in the house can get cold and last year there were waiting lists for heaters! You can find pretty much everything you need here. Don't worry.

it can get chilly here in later winter. And yes..living in a furnished apartment is nice..don't have to have the hassle of finding all the furniture when you arrive! By the way..the beds are NOT the same size as in the US. Bring a mattress pad with you tho..as you can't find any here!!! I think I bought the last King size one there was in Doha!! Bring a few jackets(suit kind or light weight ones will do) and sweaters..because the air conditioning works WAY too well in some buildings. and most of all...WELCOME to Doha!!!
