Urgent: Can I bring Chinese cooking alcohol?

Think-Twice
By Think-Twice

Hello,

Quick question: can I bring Chinese traditional alcohol (used for cooking) to Qatar? Is it prohibited there?

Had anyone seen similar cooking alcohol available in local supermarkets?

Thanks.

Hello,

Didn't expect that so many got excited about this topic. Chinese do cook with alcohol (brewed with rice) to bring out the flavour and make food smell better.

I didn't bring those cooking alcohol when I fled here. Just brought some traditional sauses. Customs did not check when my luggages were scanned.

Thanks.

I stand corrected...although the balsamic vinegar in the shops here is the non-alcoholic variety.

I love it on salads and in soups mainly. Also for making V Marys. Yummy.

I was just doing my impersonation of an old bag lady, with her meths in a brown paper bag, roaming the streets looking for a cardboard city to settle down in under a big copy of a Sunday newspaper.

Yes, you're sure right about that.

I can't believe I forgot the vodka in my Bloody Mary. My mixing skills are a bloody shame too. Because the alcohol in the balsamic vinegar definitely isn't going to do much.

Yes, yes, I'm sure everyone is going to take to drinking balsamic vinegar now. You can get tomato juice and a celery stick and make some kind of bloody mary, using balsamic vinegar as a substitute for what I call "What's this here" sauce. :P

however a bit of research (just now) tells me some are, and some aren't. Depends on the 'brand'.

Once again the authentic balsamic vinegar is alcoholic.

Go check this web page: http://www.balsamico.it/ which is from an important group of producers of one of the best balsamic vinegar in Italy and on the English version of it you will read:

“Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena is obtained from crushed grape-must which is cooked, matured through slow acetification, deriving from natural fermentation and progressive concentration and through lengthy aging in a series of small barrels of different kinds of wood, with no addition of aromatic substance”

I’m sure there are different levels and qualities of balsamic vinegar but for me there is just one type of “aceto balsamico”: the one above! … I’m spoiled like that ; )

Balsamic vinegar has no alcohol...it is not a wine vinegar (although often described as one). It is made from unfermented grape juice.

People - wine vinegar, at least the proper one, is alcoholic (about 3-6%) and balsamic vinegar is wine vinegar! You don’t drink though but use it for cooking.

Oh and BTW they sell it here in some supermarkets too ; )

Sorry to correct some people but some vinegar doesn't contain amounts of vinegar.

Spirit vinegar is halal.

@think twice. But your cooking liquids in a normal vinegar bottle.

My man brought in once from abroad a bottle of balsamic vinegar, which is alcoholic but for cooking, and they let him in. He declared it though, showed the bottle and said it was vinegar.

one would never get it through as far as departure lounge. liquids can only be bought AFTER one has gone through customs and security.

To try bringing alcohol through security in a water bottle one would probably be arrested for carrying a potential bomb! (just need to soak a rag in the alcohol, stick it in the bottle neck and set fire to it then lob it wherever!)

lmao what ARE you thinking of! :P
