for me...compound villa is better than stand alone villa...simply for the reasons that are given above and of course, from personal experience as well...
I agree that stand alone villas tend to get very secluded and lonely for families with kids. I am in a situation in which my kids have a huge space to play but no playmates. I would go for a compound villa.
If you have children go for a compound. I myself am in a stand alone and I really feel for my children as they do not have other kids to play with and only have the space around the villa.
Stand alone villa: POSITIVE -- Usually bigger, more room, more freedom, higher possibility of subdividing and share with other families.
NEGATIVE -- Usually more expensive (as they are bigger), less facilities, you are 'on your own'.
Compound Villas: POSITIVE -- Security, neighbour from more or less the same 'social strata' (can be good or bad), more friends for kids, facilities, maintenance.
NEGATIVE -- less freedom.
A few months ago I also struggle with the decision whether to move to a compound or stand alone villas. In the end as a newcomer I opted for the safety in number of a compound villa.

To me if you can afford, go for standalone villa. Qatar is safe
