Is Skype blocked in Qatar??
Hi all,
I know that Qatar has a censored Internet, so is Skype and any other similiar phone services blocked??
What kind of stuff does the Qatar Internet block and does it get annoying to the point that you might need to switch to un censored service such as Orbit?

Never had any problems with Skype, hotmail, MSN or any other messaging progs for that matter.
QTEL (Qatar internet company), do block quite a few sits allegedly, although I've never come across anything that has been blocked. I think as long as you're not searching for anything dodgy you're okay. See it as being in school again, remember when all of the sites were blocked if they thought there may be something remotely wrong with it - I think it's the same here.

You have to go to 'your account' info on the skype website and link your paypal account with your skype account. the link is under 'payments' I think.
Once I find out that which service is avaialble here, I will let you know.
I asked skype people and they send me an email saying that paypal service is not available in Qatar. I have an account on paypal but I don't know how to use it for paypal.
Setup a Paypal account and pay for Skype through that.

I was using skype since last three years but few days ago my same credit card was not accepted by skype. I tried to pay by other payment methods but none of them is working. I checked with my friends and they say skype service is working fine but payment method is blocked by Qtel. Some other net to phone services are blocked. A new popular service 'lowratevoip' is accessible using vouchers but the shops were raided by police last week and the shopkeepers had to remove vouchers from their shops. Qtel is trying hard to stop everyone using internet telephone services.
While not impossible, it's actually quite hard for telcos & ISPs to block Skype due to the way it accesses the internet from your computer.

My parents use skype to call me from Doha. They use something called a yap phone.
my mother worked in Dubai for the last 3 years and we were regular users of Skype when contacting her, no worries at all.
she's back in Doha now and occassionally the quality is poor, I don't know if it's skype that has the issue or if ISP traffic is busy in Qatar.
MSN messenger also works well.
Skype is working fine. Just got a skype enabled phone, and the sound quality is a bit distant, but much more convenient than the computer based headsets. Have heard that SKype is blocked in teh UAE though.

I am using skype here for months already, its perfectly ok. No problem with skype here.

Orbit Provides Internet, I am currently in Saudi Arabia, and have Orbit Internet.
I use Justvoip...its open and the voice is more clear...same as normal landline calls...

no skype is on. qtel blocks most sites with adult content.
