Single woman moving to qatar
Hello to all,
as so many others I am considering moving to Qatar.
Most of the threads I read were about families moving to Qatar, but as I do not have to take care about anybody, how much money will you need per month as a single person?
I think that I will get a housing allowance and free meals, but will need a car and I don't know which extra costs come with an apartment. Also, I heard about villa-sharing - how does it work and where do you find people to share a villa with?
What about sports in Qatar? I am a race-biking freak, so is it possible to bike there in general and especially as a woman?
Thanks for your answers and greetings from Germany
The suggested site is very helpful and informative. Thanks.
The site made mention of tourist agencies as possible sponsors for tourist visa. As I and my two (2) companions plan to go to Qatar early next year on a vacation, and possibly on exploration of job opportunities, I am wondering if you know of a tourist agency or a sponsor who can secure a tourist or visit visa for us. I have many concerns about moving and working in Qatar, among others, but for now, this will do.
Your reply shall be highly appreciated.
pls come soon.. will see u in airport..
Post Euro....
Germany is way more expensive than here...
In 1982 I could get a huge Scnitzel sandwich, fries and a beer for one US dollar...
Last time I was there it was like 20 euro...
I'd be getting the heck out of there too...

Hey Martin, sorry, I still live in berlin. I will fly there around December 15th to stay there for...we will see :-)
Beer seems to be really expensive, good that I do not really like it.. Here you bay between 2 Euros (in a cheap!!! bar) and 5 Euros in an expensive hotel bar (in the hip in-bars or 5-Star-Deluxe Hotels even more).
Looking forward to meeting all you german guys there (and qatarisun who'll find the perfect match for everybody?!?!)
Good morning,
I agree to disagree, having lived in Germany for over 30 years I find that many prices here overtake the food budget I had in Germany.
Mcdonalds is not that cheap either wherever you go in the world the only advantage is that its fast if you are hungry.
I'm not sure what you pay for a beer in Germany but here you are paying for a can of beer anything from QR22,-- upwards if you go for a glass of wine you pay QR 30,-- and in the Rydges you only get half a glass for that.
I really don't agree with ***You will spend less money here on everyday living than you do in Germany.****
If you stick to Mc Donalds and shawarmas maybe... but not if you go to the supermarket and want to cook a nice meal..... sorry..... my budget for food and daily things doubled in the last 4 years...... am i the only one???
Not talking about going out, where you can have a beer or so..... there it is getting definitly expensive...
by the way, i am german too
I am hired! I am hired!!
NOW I know what to say on my future interviews!!! just few words: I CAN HELP YOU TO MANAGE THE BUDGET OF THE COMPANY!..lol...
Don't worry. You will work with my budgets anyway ;-) I'll take your offer LOL
too late! just was going to work as a matchmaker for today... but you guys are too fast... you deprived me of my commissions...lol...
Hi Susanne,
Martin
Like all of them have mentioned, the killes is the RENT. If you're one who loves dining out and enjoys clubbing, than surely your expensives would be more than a 1000 riyals a month. If you're a homebound on the other hand....than you could actually save quite a bit.
...seems as living in Qatar will become very interesting...do you think 300 QR monthly is enough for water and electricity if you have only a one or two room apartment?
1:
You will spend less money here on everyday living than you do in Germany. Its cheaper in the supermarket, The cars are cheaper, the gas is almost free.
1b> For renting a flat/villa thats a different story. The amount of available objects seem to be raising. But, by som strange factor so is the rents. The rents here as you alreade now is very high. But finding something should not be a problem. And dont try to fix ahead in Germany, forget it. Most things here is made available NOW, and meaning NOW. So, if a newbuilding is scheduled for completion, you will not see it advertised until its completded. But when you come here you talk to co workers and you will find something! Extra cost for living. That would be for electricity and water. Included in flats. Not more than 1000Qr for a small villa if you are average careful during the summer.
2. Biking No idea, listen to others. I will go playing icehockey when my equipment arrives. So, as you see most things is here, but you may have too look for it. But in the summer.... 50 deg/c.....
Hope you find Qatar nice.
Wünsche dir viel Glück für deine Zeit in Doha.
Liebe Grüsse aus der Schweiz.

I have just sent you a PM on who is the best contact here from the Germans they do a lot to support each other so no worries on that.
Just to make it clear, in the German text I was just asking if there's anybody else here from Germany and if there are some crazy race-biking people here.
And please, Nazis are a minority in Germany!!!! No normal German citizen wants to be called a Nazi... German people are as open-minded and interested in other cultures and religions as the rest of the world - you will have some "foul eggs" in every country, I guess. But the average German is not a Nazi.
Sorry for bothering you with that stuff, but this issue is very important to me :-)
By the way, Beer is really good in Germany;-)
Cheers!

Everything normal thank you and yourself?? Have a lot of work today so I will not be able to follow thw post too much.
Susanne
To all your questions - many have answered them very clearly, there is a "Deutsch Stammtisch" here and also a quite large German community so you will be able to join many things. I will PM you the e-mail of one of the great organises of all German getogethers, however, she is going to Dubai this week and there is another lady taking over I don't have the email address here.
To biking - it would be on a normal day extremely dangerous however, Doha does have a biking club - on the streets you are playing with your life just driving a car never mind riding a bicycle. Which means the traffic out here takes some getting used to and although there are rules and regulations in place it is not like Germany.
There are a of of clubs and other things out here however, your life quality is made by you - so just come and enjoy what Qatar has to offer.
Morning to you girl, hmmmm...alright no jokes about the Nazi camps...it was just a sign of telling its al in German in here...but then I'm sure that must be something qite bad and sad...so no Nazi Camps...
Alright, so how are you girl, hows things going...?

now time for some real tips...
bring these items...
1. a good digital camera (this place can be great)
2. some sunblock
3. patients (it can take longer to drive to some places than to walk)
4. some free time (because there are alot of beaches and things to do)
other than that... i think you will be fine
Oh, international schools...um they tend to be a bit further away. You'll defintely need a car in this city.

Museum Road, I'm not sure where that is (I'm awful with the road names) but I think it might be off the Corniche. So you can find apartments reasonably near there, but nothing in this city is walking distance. Look up near Jaidah Flyover or Muntazah for apartments. 10QAR is more then enough, you should have no problems finding a nice place with a bit left over.

Hi Gypsy.... my housing allowance is QR10k per month. Will I be able to get a 1) 1-bedrooom f/f apartment, or 2) 2-bedroom f/f apartment with this allowance? I will be moving to Qatar this Sunday. My office is situated along Museum Road... will I be able to get any accommodation near there within this budget? Any internatiol schools within that area? Thanks
Hey Ksarat, I'm fine, hope you are as well...

" Live Life To The Fullest ! Enjoy Yourself "
First up...hey buddy how you doing?
Second a couple of my replies to your enormous amount of questions...(kidding there)...
1)Your question as to how much money would you require as a single person is something that is very subjective and it gets quite tough to place a figure since it depends from person to person, based on their normal routine life, their social life and their entertainment means, and ofcourse not to forget their standard of living...
While you have mentioned that greetings are from Germany, if I were to presume that you come from Germany and since you would quite used to the easy going social life there I would place a price at the figure ranging from QR 5000 - QR 7000, which is just your basic salary excluding your allowances...
2) Transport will cost you about QR 1500/- for a nice car per month to own one.
3) Extra income with the house: well girl, there would be utlities to take care of like Elect, Phone, Water which are associated with every other house in the entire world.
4) Villa-sharing: Well that does happen due to the fact about the steep high rents in Qatar. You could find yourself a couple of places here on this Site, in the local newspapers.
Villa sharing is basically the same way you would do if you are staying with your friends in hostels or backpackers around the world. The only thing it is legal there, illegal there. People take a big villa, create a couple of plywood partitions, paint them up and create a seprate entrance and there you go - you have a new house ready to use...most of the times you would find that this really not good, but then all those times people end up looking at their pockets...
Sports: Recreation is there in Qatar...but I wouldn't be able to comment on Race-bikers...you would have to wait for someone like me to come by and leave you that reply...
Cheers...take care buddy...
Look at the opportunity that Qatar posts for you and dont think too much...

Hi Susanne,
You're main issue will be rent. You need to make sure your housing allowance is between 7000 and 10,000QR or you won't be able to rent a place or afford to live. Personally I would be pushing for free company housing. You can Villa Share, but I recommend coming here first and finding someone, rather then doing it online from Germany.
Sports is big in Qatar, you can sign up for a membership at Aspire for pretty cheap, and there's loads of places to bike, you can go on the Corniche, up the North Road, or even at Aspire.
