Shipping Cars from Houston to Qatar
By volinqatar •
My wife and I are headed over soon and are contemplating shipping our two new cars (a 2007 and 2008) from Houston to Qatar. I read as many of the relevant posts as I could and it seems like most recommend against it but I still want to run the numbers.
I have pricing for a 40' container that will handle both vehicles but I don't have my arms around the Qatar import/custom duties/fees/taxes.
Has anyone imported a vehicle from Houston to Qatar? If so, how do you figure up the duties/fees/taxes? Any suggested resources?
Many Thanks!
Could you tell me how much they are going to charge you to ship? What's the name of the company? To answer some of your questions, i heard there will be a 4% duty on the cars, no need to modify the car except that you have to install a fire extinguisher, you don't have to export the car once you decide to leave you can sell it there, I don't have an answer for your last question. Couple of things to think about: 1) I heared you have to be a Qatari resident before you import. 2) I heard that American cars depreciate fast and don't have a good reselling value. I'm thinking about shipping my Tahoe but i haven't made a final decision yet. Let me know what you think.
1) is there an import duty on vehicles if they are for personal use? If so, what % and determined on what basis?
2) if there is no import duty and you import for personal use, is there an obligation to export the vehicles?
3) are there any obligations to modify a vehicle if it meets US standards (i.e. a 2007 tahoe). I have heard of an obligation to remove a catalytic converter...???? Sounds ify to me.
4) has anyone heard of a fee to legalize the import? any idea how much it runs?
Many, many thanks to anyone who can help! :)

You might try calling the shipping agents listed in the yellow pages there. They may have information on import duty here. One thing you need to be sure of is that you have clear titles on the vehicles with no outstanding loans.
We are trying to ship cars, can you tell me what company you are using to ship the cars and the approximate cost for the container. As for the import information, we are also having a hard time but we did hear that taxes are 4%. Good luck with resources because we have been trying to figure that out for a while, we called everywhere we can think of and finally we decided to use this forum for possible help. Let me know when you get an answer.
