Ramadan for beginners!

Hi everyone :-D

This is my first post although i've been reading and researching on this site for a while now. It's been soooo helpful and is a fantastic site :-)I've made so many notes!!!

My boyfriend will be moving out to Qatar on the 14th of September during Ramadan. Im trying to help him at the moment by reading up on things and trying to find out bits and bobs that may help him settle in more quickly. Has anyone any tips for him regarding Ramadan? I thought if I could find out some things now it would mean less to figure out while he is trying to sort everything else out! Is there a good supermarket anywhere where he could stock up on a bit of food when he first arrives? I've read on another post that some hotels will still be open for food during the day - are they a few of these that will be easy to find?

Thank you for any advice and help :-) there may be a few more posts to follow!

Just I need everyone knows what's the situation in Ramadan, the Muslims stop eating & drinking to have the same feeling of the poor people who don't have anything to eat that's why after Ramadan all single muslim must pay for charity for poor people to make them happy.

About yr question only in the noon time the resturant will be close but in sunset time all the resturants will be open, all the grocery & supermarket are open in the noon time. Some hotels serve the meals in the noon time but they cover the place with partition or something to respect the fasting people.Last year I was with my friend she got her breakfast in Ramada hotel in the ground floor. You can say that all the hotels serve all the meals in Ramadan .. Also you can try "Khaima" the tent in the all the hotels it's nice with the music & the delecius food.

Also ,you can try oneday to fast as I did with my friends last year & muslims & non muslims from Doha Asian Games & we got our break fast in the sunset time in the garden in the corniche..

Doha is a free city you can do what u like to doh but just respect the others.

Hello,

I note someone's post that 'not to eat, drink and smoke between sunrise and sunset in front of Muslims as it can insult them'. How about having lunch, afternoon-tea or snacks in office areas? Is it allowed/appropriate? How could we eat in offices properly during the period?

Excuse my ignorance, is it true that they can't drink (even water) between sunrise and sunset?

Don't think that the whole country comes to a standstill just because we are fasting. All the shops are open. They only close just before sunset and will open later on. And then they will be open until midnight. Anyway, most supermarkets will put a note up to announce their opening times. Yes, most restaurants are closed during the day, but then most hotels will have an area, hidden from open view, where they will serve food.He will definately not starve. Offices are open and business is not really like usual, more on a slower tempo. But then again, this depends on the type of business you are dealing with. Some shops (not foodshops) will be closed in the afternoon and open around 7/8pm and then stay open late. And if you drive around Doha at midnight it will be so crowed on the streets, that you think it is during the day. Nothing to fear or worry about. Business as usual!

Well, yeah most of the supermarkets will be open in daytime during Ramadan, he really doesnt need to stock anything, just get the needed daily grocery and that's all.

hmm, I believe there will be some small dining corners in some hotels during daytime.RC, FSHR, Ramada, Sheraton, etc..

All the best for ur BF

That's right.

I wake up sometimes at 3 am (to eat and shower before prayer), sometimes I'd go with some friends to a restaurant to eat.

Most things are open late at night in Doha normally - in Ramadaan things are open extra late/early into the morning since people stay up most of the night praying (and eating!)

Lol you don't need to stock up....

Restaurants are open and so are super-markets. You make it seem like everyone has to hibernate.

Don't worry, all supermarkets are open, only the restaurants are closed till sunset, but than all are opening and open till late. So he won't die from hungriness for sure! Just tell him not to eat, drink and smoke between sunrise and sunset in front of Muslims as it can insult them. Only in his privacy.

Just make sure he stock up his fridge when he is here ... all eateries are shuts till dawn during Ramadhan. And then most of them are pack because people break their fast in the same time.

Some hotel will still have a certain section of their restaurant open ... but they wont advertise that. Best you ask your boyfriend and ring around the hotel and find out.

I remembered around 2 yrs back ... Ritz Carlton have a small area near indoor swimming pool for eating during Ramadhan, secluded from public eyes.

The time when people start breaking their fast, best stay off the road. People drive extra crazy and extra manic (they already drive crazy during normal days here) ...

Accident rate goes higher during Ramadhan man too ... people less impatient on the road and road rage become more regular. Last year i saw a guy in BMW pulling out another driver from the car in The Mall roundabout and i think they going to fight one to one on the road.

About supermarket ... you did not say where your boyfriend going to stay, so i cant recommend nearby groceries. B

Thats all i can think off now ... good luck for the move for your boyfriend :-)
