Qatar's Population Surpasses 2 Million

Qatar's population has surpassed two million for the first time ever, totaling 2,035,106 people as of Monday, September 30, according to statistics released by the Qatar Statistics Authority.

Population growth is expected to continue, as the 2022 World Cup nears. In the Qatar Economic Outlook 2013-2014 report, it is predicted that Qatar's population will exceed over 2.2 million by 2014.

Doha has been experiencing a great deal of traffic congestion, likely to get worse as the population continues to increase.

What do you think? Does the city have the capacity to handle more influx of individuals?

From what i have heard it seems that the Qatar Housing Authority purposely slows the process of granting building and constructing permits for private residences that will be rented to expatriates. This means that there is a willful attempt to force the rental prices to go higher by artificially slowing the supply of residences.

I hope this is not true and I hope the good people in the Qatari authority are made aware of it and do something about it as this practice of inflation and price fixing is forbidden according to islamic law.

... don't blame the new arrivals on all the problems that were already existant before they got here. Besides as it the new guys are mostly low paid construction workers who might not even be eligible for a driving licence or even to have a look inside of QDC to admire the exotic brew packed in the bottles

Here is a solid solution to control the traffic congestion:

Put up the auto toll collecting stations (with good fee list) on the main arteries and see the results.

Even in the US toll roads are mostly deserted.

Thelonius, I think we don't need survey to have population statistics.. even for illegal workers, they know whose id is expired and not renewed yet..
