I consider to move to Qatar to open a restaurant, Viennese Cafe , or similar.

I ask you old Qatar pros for your opinion.

Is there demand, enough folks going out , good environment in general?

How you feel about???

Very very interested to get your opinion.

Maybe I see you there........CoolFrown?

We're negotiating with some local people who may be able to help us get the necessary licences.

With luck, we could be open by September ..... I'll be announcing it loud and proud here on QL if it happens!

You'll not be able to provide alcohol so you have to factor this into your plans, which means that you will have to be providing food and service that is way better than anything that the hotels can provide as this is what you will be competing with. I looked into when I first arrived in doha and its not just a matter of finding a place to set up you have a whole barage of certification that you have to obtain before you can even open your doors and the whole proccess takes money, money and more money. Charan is right you still need a sponsor as it is a business. But the main thing that put me off was no liquor as it means if someone has to choose between patroning your establishment and not being able to drink or going to a hotel were they can, if most people are honest the hotel would win.

By anonymous• 29 Apr 2008 12:17

Luckily enough we don't need a sponsor to open up a can of beans lol lol

and what kind of cuisine is that, DohaSteve??

..and I don't think you can find anything cheaper than that anyway.. Ramada is a primary location... I guess, the ground floor rent is about double/triple...

but the main thing is getting the license i guess.. coz I know for some kinds of businesses it's very hard or even next to impossible to get a license at the first place...

I'm pretty sure that restaurants are one of the types of business for which you can have 100% foreign ownership, but check with a lawyer. As with restaurants and cafe's all over the world, it's all about location, location, location (provided of course that the menu and service are up to scratch). The pricey thing will be the rents; there was a small restaurant above Starbucks at Ramada junction that my wife and I looked at, but the rent was QR 50,000 per motnh. Way too much for a commercial property that was above ground level! We are thinking of opening a restaurant too, with a cuisine that is not in Qatar yet. Good luck, and of course if you do open up, keep us posted! Always looking for somewhere new to try!

nopsy ... if you contact Qatari (he is QL owner), i am sure you can sort some agreement with him. Maybe you can make a lucky draw and give away meal of your restaurant in return you got to advertise your establishment for free through QL or something like that. I have no idea about the details, it is just on the of my head.

Dear Nopsy ... pls dont duplicate your thread all over the place.

And is that possible if you do open a restaurant in Doha and charging the customer 'service charge', can you make sure the waitress / waiter will get the money?

Generally more restaurant opening means more choice for the customer for eating out. Competition always good.
