Maltese in Qatar
A new Community has been organised only lately and this is from the Mediterranean Island of Malta (EU).
This may probably be the smallest of communities in Qatar, it should be since Malta is one of the smallest nations worldwide. However we are thick as thieves and are happy to assist should anyone asks for our support. This especially if it is coming from our Maltese co-nationals who would need assistance and guidance to move to Qatar (or the GCC) as well as to any Maltese entrepreneur who might need information or support in starting up his/her enterprise with a Qatar-based counterpart.
Merhba b'kulhadd u tislijiet mil-qalb.

Are there any Maltese living there?
I have so many questions but maybe these are the most important which maybe someone can help
1. which are the nicer areas to live in and which are the "dont go theres"?
2. How much is the cost of living? For utilities, entertainment, food and housekeeping et... I am moving on my own and just wanted a guideline
3. Is there much to do besides work? how do you guys spend weekends? Is there a good social life?
4. Are there any things I have to particularly look out for when offered an empolyment contract?
Many people who are not well versed with our country would immediately enquire as to the connotation of either The Maltese Falcon, or the well known confectionery item; Maltesers.
The Maltese Falcon, which is truly a cinematographic classic from 1941 casting Humphrey Bogart and directed by the legendry John Huston, has no connotation with our nation. It is only a plot revolving around a statuette which went by this synonimous name.
The confectionery item Maltesers is also not connected to the Maltese nation. Its derivated name (since launch in 1936) is due to the fact that these sweets are made from malted milk.
However with respect to the falcon, one needs to mention part of our history which says that when the Order of the Knights Hospitaliers of Jerusalem and of Rhodes, came to Malta under Papl decreet in 1535 under the rule of the then Grand Master Jean Villers de l'Isle Adam, they established themselves in the then capital city of Mdina, later replaced as a capital city by the more modern Valletta in 1568 after the latter was built by the heroic Grand Master Jean de la Vallette. In 1936 however, l'Isle Adam noted that the peninsula of St Angelo was very much suited for defending invadors and opted to fortify it further.
As part of the deal with the Maltese, a perpetual emphytheusis (ground rent) was agreed for the cost of one Falcon per annum.
I know there's a Falcon from there...
Dear Malpaso,
Yes Malta is a Country on its own merits. It is an archipelago located at the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, with the largest inhabited Island measuring approximately 32km x 16km. It is a European Country and an EU state as from 01 May 2004, our currency is the € and our language is Maltese which is of semitic origin but which, like many other languages, has been greatly influenced over the years by Anglo-Saxon and Latin verbosity. Malta is a Democratic Republic state based on Christian Catholic foundations.
Malta is a country with a very rich history dating back to Megalithic times, in fact pre-historic evidence is very apparent on the island and this dates back to thousand of years older than Stonhenge. everywhere you go in Malta, and every town or village you walk through is overflowing with history and folklore, thus one does not need to dig deep into the books and internet to find any, but one would definitely end up digging for more and more information once he/she becomes captivated and mesmerised with the beauty and history as this will be uncovered.
It is suggested that one would visit Wikipedia or http://www.visitmalta.com/main for better acquaintance with this Mediterranean gem.
With respect to Tourism, well this is our main industry and visiting Malta is definitely an experience not to be missed.
Last week, His Highness the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani and HE Dr George Abela, the President of the Republic of Malta signed and agreement whereby Qatar Airways will be flying to Malta for Aircraft servicing. This has surely paved the way to the introduction of direct flights from Doha to Malta which are now expected to possibly start as from 2010. The transit would approximately last 4½ hours as opposed to the much longer one which we presently have to go through via Dubai with Emirates Airlines. Another option at present however would be on Qatar Airways via Rome from where an Airmalta or Alitalia flight can then be boarded to Malta.
I trust that you will find the above to be of interest and wish you to visit Malta for an experience of a lifetime.
sorry, no offense, i didn't know.
The President of the Republic of Malta, his Excellency Dr George Abela, accompanied by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Tonio Borg, shall be heading a business mission of twenty five delegates in Doha Qatar between the 26th and the 27th of August.
His Excellency and the Honourable Prime Minister shall be hosted by His Excellency Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar.
This mission is being looked at very positively from both parties espacially by the Maltese side, who envisage to be able to widen the limited economic horizons of the tiny European Nation State further into the GCC. Malta already exports a considerably amount of goods to Qatar and the rest of the GCC, with the main commodities being foodstuffs. This mission shall focus to also introduce other beneficiary commodities to Qatar including those in the sectors of training, healthcare, financial, and other services that Malta specialises in.
