Living Accommodations and Schooling in Ras Laffan?
Hello,
I have been asked by my oil company to consider taking an assignemnt in a gas project to be developed in Ras Laffan. I am currently living in Louisiana USA and have a daughter that will be starting 8th grade this fall 2006.
The assignment would invlove a domestic relocation to Texas in 1Q07 for the project engineering with relocation to Qatar for commissioning and start-up probably in late 2008.
My concern is that my daughter would start HS in Texas, with perhaps moving to Qatar in the middle of her sophmore year. I did some research and see that there is a good american school in Doha and lots of info on accommodations.
However, there is nothing on living accommodations or schools in Ras Laffan. Do people with kids in high school live in Doha and commute to work (80+ km), or are there other alternatives.
I know this is early but would like to have some info before I make a committment.
Thanks in advance,
Quique
Will your company provide accommodation? There are plenty of US families living in the north of Doha, children go to the American School by bus and dad/mum drives to Ras Laffan. Journey time to Ras Laffan gates is about 45 minutes. Your priority should be to secure a school place for your daughter.
I am likely to relocate to Doha soon for work. Could somebody please assist with information on what it takes (estimate in QR, excluding accommodation and school fees) to run a family of five in DOHA.
Get a mini flyingcraft so you can move from there to doha ASAP! ;D
Whooo can top my advice? :P
There is no high school in Al Khor, they all have to come to Doha.
Better get in line for ASD, it is full most of the time.
I just found about this town Al-Khor which houses many of the workers for Ras Laffan companies, but it only has a Britsh curriculum school.
I have heard good and bad things about this arrangement because they consider Ras LAffan too small and boring.
I lived in Jubail, Saudi Arabia before but communted to the big cities (Dammam and Al-Khobar) weekly. It was not a bad deal since did not have to deal with traffic but on the weekends.
Well, I will have to check with my company to see what are the arrangemnts for Ex-pats with children in High School age. I guess that the best deal would be to find a compound in the north of Doha to simplify getting out of the city during rush hour.
How are students transported to the American School of Doha? By parents or do they offer some sort of transportation?
Thanks,
Quique
You understand it correct, Live in Doha and commute to RasLaffen
