Hi to anyone who can shed some light,

I'm in the process of accepting an offer to work at the above Site....

It is Camp based living and I'm hoping there is something to do (out in the sticks so to speak) after work? Is the food good, is there a gym or other recreational activities to get involved with? I guess the above depends on who you are employed by, is it possible to use other facilities of other companies?

Bring what essential things????? for a 12/2 week rotation?

For the living quaters, is there tv, internet (skype) or does one rely on a local mobile for communicating

Yada yada yada,

Any help, advice, guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Happy days,

John

Good luck - just in case you dont know Ramadan starts in mid september so all bars are shut for a month...... bad timing i suppose but get you boozing done quick. It you dont know what Ramadan is then refer to previous postings but basically you just have to be sneaky when you want a drink of water etc. so not to offend any muslisms.

Red Pope that cartoon is great, nice one. Unfortunately people cant protest here for their own human rights.....

Back on topic for advisor - yes you get a booze licence for a central expensive booze depot in Doha. You have to take it home and lots of ex-pats have bars in their houses, well the ones who have lived in the region for long enough tend too.... you CANT take booze into RLC! So you will have to make do with going into Doha and going to the many bars that exist and drinking Fosters (not much choice here), i opted for Kilkenny when its available. There are dress codes for certain bars and ethnic cleansing will be performed by doorman at some locailities. Well this is a police state so you have to live with it or move out. 3mnths on 2 weeks off - nice life. Save money and then try and blow it all in thailand or somewhere.

Labor Camps in Doha

Thanks for your reply Cnidaria,

It really seems deadly boring staying in a camp…Ah well…Money is the driving reason. I really hope I meet some friends in Qatar that will make my 3 month/2 weeks rotation not as boring as it could be:)

Pilipino band does not seem to be very exiting to me considering no beer is available at camp and Jazz is the music I like :) Talking about beer-how do you survive without one? Have you got a liqueur certificate or whatever is required to buy drinks from the store in Doha? Is it possible to bring beer and drink it in you apartment when nobody can see you? I guess I know the answer...NO!

Please drop me a note should you get any more info. Take care!

To put it simply advisor, taxis don't get into RLC. They need a RLC pass. So you have to walk back to your camp, a few kilometers at most but in this heat pretty terrible. Taxis will cost you 100-200+ QR each way depends on if they are official taxis, destination etc. spilt that between 4 people not to bad. Or you could get a lift from somebody driving into Doha from one of the sites / plants.

I am not 100% familar with camps but they appear segregated into different companies with variable standards - Techniq should be one of the better.

Only recently with the intro of some of the majors have events started like a big concert with philipion band and recently a footbal competition. But nothing else, even Doha has more social functions.....

Hello Skanky! Thanks for your reply. We are the colleagues as I see…Great1 What company are you working for? I gonna work for Technip. I do not think I have a choice-camp is mentioned in a contract. What is the problem with taxi? What sort of ID do they need? And if you do get a taxi-how much does it cost to travel from Ras Laffan to Doha and back? Must be expensive….

Is it just one big camp in Ras Laffan for everybody working there or different companies have the different camps? Please-give me an idea of how it works in Ras Laffan, would you?

Thanks….

I work here and the company has a camp in ras laffan but its boring, theres nothing to do. And you are about 1 hour away from Doha. So if you ask me about to live in ras laffan. just depends on your life style. Also you cant take taxis, cause to get into the complex they need ID, so if you think living in the camp but taking taxis to doha sometimes its a mission.

If you can take a villa or a room outside ras laffan it will be better for u.

Thanks god I got a villa, but am still in the desert.
