Importing/buying Motorbike in Doha

Hi Guys!

So, internet, wonderfull thing eh? Allowed me to find this very usefull forum!

So, i'm moving to a new project in Doha and will be there for 6 to 12 months. Now, I can't stand cars. I fall asleep behind the wheel when doing lessons - no joke, i have! So many years ago I tried motor bikes and love em. I've now been riding for well over 10 years - all of it on 600cc+ supersports and have an excellent record (read: zero points on my UK license, full no claims).

I have been doing some reading of this forum and I understand that people seem to have a very "unsafe" view of bikes, or rather car drivers, in Doha however, I will examine the risk once I get there.

So, the question is, to import a bike or buy one should I chose to ride in Doha?

I have been googling and I have been unable to find any bike dealers in Doha, can anyone help with this please?

Whats the process of shipping a bike from the UK to Doha? Its an Aprilia RSVR Factory (08 plate).

thanks for all your help!

Hi Hurram, I found your post helpful. Thanks for the info. Just wanted to clarify, the rates you mentioned (for suzuki - 1000cc bike, between 25-30k). Are you mentioning about a new or a used one? & if its for a new one, then for how much can i get a used one (as I am willing to get a 600cc bike)? Do you have any contact who could help me out to get a used one. Well, I would prefer a Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha or Suzuki......

Anything would do...

@hurram13

those prices sound too good. Is that for a new bike?

I'm looking to buy either (new):

-Suzuki gsx r1000 (bike I have at home)

-honda cbr 1000rr

-yamaha r1

-Kawasaki zx-10r

has anyone recently bought one of the above? Mind sharing how much you paid?

I "was" very interested in the bmw s1000rr, but after being quoted 79900 qar, thought otherwise. Is it just me or is the price extremely inflated. Much more expensive then in the u.s.

Also, for foreigners, did you get your motorcycle license converted to Qatari from your home country, or did you have to do a while new test altogether?

Really hope someone has some info. Many thanks!

Bikes actually do have "lh or rh" .... it affects the way the headlights point so actually, not as stupid question as you think!

And the things which I hate the most is R/A. Some in last lane without changing the lane , will go left ( even without idicating ). Most of them even don't know what an indicator is. Be careful while riding, becuase stupid driving of others can harm one hardly.

... because it all depends on the policeman's mood of the day. Is it illegal? Yes. Do people get away with it though? Yes. But you can get into trouble if your exhaust 'goes off' next to a policeman. Most roundabouts and major junctions here are monitored by the police as driving here is a bit like 'jungle law' - just go and hope not to crash!

But that's a rare case.

Pitstop said it.

They don't actually care while you ride ,even if it's a race exhaust or without DBkiller , but if someone get's irritated (even officers who are on off ) you will be in trouble .

ok but you don't actually know if they activley go after loud exhausts or not .... ? Can anyone comment on this although I suspect not after Shaz's comment earlier?

stuza, when someone irritated the wrong person, yes they get pulled over.

Race exhausts are illegal in just about all countries, the only question is, in any given country, do the police actually care?

I've heard of a few people who have been pulled here in the UK for something dangerous/careless but as the police couldnt prove it, they hit them with the exhausts. So, whilst they are illegal in the UK, they rarely pull you for the exhausts.

stuza, exhaust systems are fine, when they are silencers! Those loud horrific ones are illegal.

I think no ( for bikes ). Almost all bikes I have seen , got akra , yoshi or laser exhaust on them.

Don't know much about that. Hope some expert will come and help you out.

Can't blame you for trying :)

The company will have fully furnished accomodation all ready for me and the company will ship the bike instead of renting me a car (as I can't drive).

Thanks for the info, i have a strong feeling I will be in contact soon!

Now, anyone able to comment on the noise a V-twin makes with race exhausts and police noticing them?

VCC is somewhat like V5C if that is the description. Glad to be at help. If there would be any more I can do for you....Please dont hesitate......

Just a question...you are just planning to bring your bike or some stuff also? Since your company is paying why not move the whole house to qatar....:)

After that contact me and we can arrange the relocation service for you.......

No matter how many times you fall.......It will still hurt!!!!!!!Ouch!!!

Thanks Pitstop! I'm looking forward to it ... its all but signed on the dotted line for May 3rd arrival. I may well be coming to you guys for new gear (which the company will buy of course!)

Hurram, it seems to me that selling and then re-buying there may actually work out slightly more expensive as I would have to advertise my own, sell it at (the usual) loss etc and then buy one only marginaly cheaper out there which I would then have to sell again. I understand that with import/export there are fees and delays but I can work with these and charge them back to the company. Also, glad to see your also a Marilyn Manson fan! :0)

Relocations, thank you for the usefull information! I'm assuming when you say VCC you are refering to what we call the V5C document which is goverment issued and belongs to the bike to show who owns it? (Registraition document). I strongly suspect if I get the contract, I will be in contact with you to help me through the process, for a fee of course! :)

As the company will be paying all shipping expenses, the £420 fee is negligable from my point of view.

Probably a question for Pitstop as they might be able to help: I've got twin Akro's on it and I did notice somewhere on this forum a guy got prosecuted for a heafty fine for a loud exhaust on his car, is this usual or unusal? Im worried im going to lose a lot of money!!! hehe

Thanks to all!!!!!

p.s. Do i need to do any mods to the bike to deal with the heat? Any fluid mix changes for the radiator etc?

Hi stouza,

If you really love the bike that you have and,to bring it over to Qatar. Here are the Process....

Documents Needed:

1. Original VCC certificate attested from the traffic dept in your UK.

2. Commercial Invoice of your bike

3. Passport Copy and Visa in Qatar

Payment for clearance: 2300 Riyals ( If your bike is comming by sea shipment )

After taking it out of the port you need to apply for a temporary insurance and you can register your bike.

Registering your bike in qatar will be easy. Im not quite familiar with the process but friends tell me a day or 2 will do it.

Email me if you need some help. We also do personal effect clearance and delivery just in case you need the service.

Good Luck in Qatar!!!!!

No matter how many times you fall.......It will still hurt!!!!!!!Ouch!!!

Hey stuza,

Welcome to Qatar in advance.

We have local dealers for Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Honda, Ducati and others. As far as after sales goes, Honda and Suzuki are the most reliable.

The motorcycling gear here is just like in the UK, probably cheaper. Here we don't have the tax charges, so - I can assure you it isn't as expensive. You are more than welcome to contact us when you get here. We run Pit Stop, Motorcycle Apparel and Accessories in Qatar. Dainese is our leading brand, and I need not say anything more. We also have many other brands,, so it all depends on your style, taste, and value for yourself.

Again, welcome to Qatar in advance!

Hi Mohammed!

Thank you for the response!.... you suggest there are bike dealers there? Would you have any links so I can assess prices please?

I can probably sell the RSV for around £5500/6000 which is roughly QAR28000. What can I get for this? (I would dearly love another big v-twin but ... aprilia make the only good one. I had an Honda SP1 and it wasn't even near the RSV)

Would I need anything special other than my UK license to ride out in Doha?

edit: and yes, you are correct. I have read many comments about how dangerous bikes are in Qatar - news flash "They are in all countries!"

Shipping your bike - don't know really about that.

I think you haveread comments which are made earlier by QLers , don't really take that into account. Either they might have heard from someone or just assuming.

But the climate matters here alot, becuase in summer the temp. reach upto 48-50 deg. cel.

Personally I prefer and suggest Suzuki. Their branch is few meters away from the airport , great customer relation and good after sales.

2. Kawasaki

3. Honda

4. Yamaha

I have been riding for many years ( standard bike ) and moved to a 600 few weeks ago and it's really a wonderful experience.

Moreover, all bikers are united here and go for ride in almost all weekends.

Try getting your biking gears from UK, here it's little bit costly .

The final decision is yours.

Regards

Mohamed
