How does Qatar compare to Bahrain? (UK expat moving soon!)

Hi everyone, It's become a distinct possibility that I may be moving to Qatar for work purposes in the next month or so.

I've been living / working in Bahrain for the past 2 months with my wife, and we both really like it here - I was wondering if anyone here has experience of both places and could enlighten me as to what the differences are between the two.

I'm more concerned for my wife really, as in are the Qataris as liberal as the Bahrainis (e.g. dress code, driving)?

Thanks for any help!

Rob

I lived in Bahrain for 17 years.

Very similar. Qatar is more modern and nicer overall.

You don't have the overload of drunk Saudis in Qatar thats for sure.

There is no dress issues in Qatar. It's the same as Bahrain.

Arm mentioned quite alot to be honest and I agree with him.

You'll like it :) (I hope)

I would recommend you to visit Doha with your wife for a weekend to have a feeling of what it looks like. It is not that far away and certainly will help you in making a right decision.

Was in Bahrain, now in Qatar. Bigger UK community in Bahrain, though Qatar has a good-size one. As in Bahrain, common sense-dressing is the norm in Qatar. Qataris are a bit more conservative than Bahrainis but I prefer them this way specially the younger generation - they are more polite and helpful, less boisterous. Everything Bahrain's got, Qatar has as well including religious toleration. You would specially like the wider spaces Qatar has to offer!

yahoo...spaghetti strap tops..middrift showing..common sense type things. That's what the MOI got upset about in the first place so that they have to "remind" us to dress correctly

conservatively ? I don't really see what you mean, but I guess there is no fixed code for clothes in Qatar. Of course having a walk with bikini along the corniche would not be invisible. I just think this would be fine here Rob. Just don't worry . Good Luck

not sure about how to compare the dress code as never been to Bahrain. She can just dress conservatively and be fine here.
