Hello Doha!!

Miss Canada
By Miss Canada

Hello peeps, I'm new to the board, as you can tell ... a newbie, per se.

I'll be moving to Doha early next month (!!) and would like some helpful tips on what I should expect. To all the international Western women out there, what significant changes have you experienced while living in Qatar? What type of clothing/dress is appropriate (for outside the office)? Should I toss the mini-skirts? Plus, what items should I bring from home that I really can't get in Doha?

Finally, how is the cost of living compared to other international cities?

Looking forward to your responses. Thanks a lot!
MC

"Miss Canada your comment is funny because as I can see the "ignorant" people did their best to answer your questions. You got your answers before this thread got astray. And once again what is it with you people who insist on some rules as to what this forum should or should not be? Qatari said plain and simple this is a place where friends chat. How ignorant indeed"

@ Alexia: I thank you for putting me in my place. It's about time, finally!!! :P

I am not insisting on how this forum should be run. Nor am I ungrateful to those who posted then proceeded to ramble on about their nothings. I am, however, suggesting that this forum would be a lot more user-friendly if its topics were keep on-track, per se; so that PEOPLE WHO SEEK SPECIFIC INFORMATION do not have to read through 'personal chat'.

A separate discussion forum could solve the problem. Maybe we need a MISC section for those random thoughts that just don't belong anywhere else?

MC, cost of living here still cheaper comparing other places. Except HOUSING !!!. You lucky you can get 3 bedroom villa for 10.000 QR, we can pay a mortgage for mansion with the same amount of money in the UK.

I'm right with you Suzanna! While I am grateful to all who posted relevant info (much thanks, your posts are very helpful), what a huge waste of time it was to read through all the personal crap posted. How ignorant. Please do us all a HUGE favour and keep your unnecessary comments to e-mails or IM.

---> Moderators: Any chance you can do something to clean up the board and really keep this as an open forum, not a chat room?

people who want to have chats irrelevant to the posts can use msn or call each other. You dont need to untune the conversations because you make it difficult for the ones who want to read a particular subject. This happens quite often.

yeah it was. Either that or there were very few people actually smoking, which is doubtful

Let them go on their own, Fish.

There must be a good reason we were not told in the first place. Now I wouldn't go even if they begged me to (I doubt they would, but still felt nice saying it!)

I used to take great care about my clothes being modest when I first arrived, but after almost 2 years here I could not care less about it. I do wear miniskirts and tank tops and little dresses whenever I want, although Suzanna is right and it is best to avoid these in the souqs and streets of Doha.

As for changes, this is what I feel most annoyed about:

Inshalla attitude

Traffic and crazy drivers

Expensive rents and cost of living

Heat and humidity -although you get lovely winters!

The feeling that you live in a construction site

Early Sunsets all year round -days are too short.

wellcome MC. I wouldn't wear mini-skirts here, i think that you will understand imidiatelly that the people here are looking at you very intensively even if you wear normal clothes. The different, than the local, style is attracting their attention. Inside the malls you wont have any problem but if you want to walk around, lets say at the souqs area then you will understand what i mean. I have expierienced some events like some local people following me for a long time. Some times especially when they are more than one and they are following me with their car i feel scared as i havent understand that country yet and what can happent here. I would suggest you to be cautious at least in the beggining.

Now, generally, the cost of leaving here is cheaper than the European one but there are some contradictions for example although if you go to the supermarket you spent less money here than in europeen countries the rents are high. Actually they are higher than the rents in my country. I also have found that some electronic devices are cheaper here (although you can not search through a great variety).

Miss Canada I am sorry it seems like this thread is going to be hijacked just like the rest of them. Before that happens let me answer few of your questions.

Yes do leave your miniskirts at home. Shorts are OK on the beach, longer shorts (knee length) are OK everywhere. We say that it's best to cover your shoulders (tshirts are great), but the truth is you see tank tops and barely there tops all the time, so this depends mainly on how comfortable you feel knowing that this is something that locals frown upon.

Significant changes? Everything will be a significant change. I'd say weather and traffic were the worst for me. Also the hierarchy of the society. You will get used to it soon enough though. You will move here in the middle of Ramadan it seems, so you will have to deal with the fasting as well. You won't be able to eat or drink in public until the sunset (not even in your car!).

You can find most of what you will need in Doha, unless you require medicines that Doha might not (and probably will not) have. Make sure you stock up.

:^)

It's as free as any other place? Not true, but we're all happy to trade certain freedoms for a decent, tax free salary

Welcome to Doha. The cost of living is way below Europe, for example, and besides it's tax free.

Sammie what are you doing awake??
