Basics of Life--Deciding on Move

Hello all—

I posted part of this earlier on another part

of the forum—and I apologize for cross-

posting—but I think these questions belong

more here.

I am considering a position as a professor

at one of the schools in Education City; from

what I can tell from reading various threads

here, the salary and benefits are good. But

I do have some other questions before I

decide.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated—

What is vet care like? (My cats are old)

Can I get special/vet-prescribed cat food?

(Hills k/d & i/d or a local or European equivalent)

What is meant by modest dress for women?

(I have an east-coast based summer wardrob, which

(I think will not cut it--spaghetti straps and tank tops--

(especially for teaching in gender-mixed classes... )

I suffer from Migraines--will I be able to get pain medication?

(including opiates for the worst attacks

(I have medical insurance through the university's US plan)

(I am assuming that the meds I take daily for migraine

prophylaxus—anti-epileptants & anti-depressants—will

not be a problem.)

Can I live as a semi-vegetarian? (I like to cook, am well-versed in

(and fond of other than American cuisines—that is, I will be more

(than happy to cook with local produce, &c.—, and eat fish;

(I eat meat rarely, and only if it is not produced by factory farms—

(but I wonder if that is even a problem... ? )

I have a monthly car allowance, but it seems from what I read

here that it is better to buy—should I try to negotiate that (aid

in buying one)? I will be here three years and do not desire

anything fancy—here I have a Scion Xb, manual, with few

bells and whistles, and I won't want anything more pricey and

prestigious in Qatar. How much per month is a lease on a

car like that (low-end Scion/Toyota or European equivalent... )

Can I use skype to talk to my mother on a regular basis?

Will I have to give up baseball?

I will be visiting next week to make sure I like it--are there

any things I should make sure to check into?

Many thanks—for responses and, more generally, for this

Forum, which has given me a wealth of useful information.

If you want a concoction of drugs for your migraine then don't hesitate to pm me. My husband is an expert at creating these!

Also we know the leading vet in doha and will be happy to give contact details to you and intro once we arrive in September. (if you are around)

We are also semi vegetarians and live on beans, lentils, fish, and other such health foods. No fatty red meat, white rice or flour in my families diet. From what I have found out through friends that because of the high population of hindus one can find all the produce they need in doha to live sufficiently on this type of diet. Perhaps we can swap recipes ;)

But don't quote me because I don't live there yet and this is all word of mouth.

than this.

Cat:  vet care here is good.  No personal experience, just word of mouth.   anyone else?

Clothing:   spaghetti straps & tank tops to be worn only in your own villa or compound.   Should not be worn out (although I see people doing it.)  It is considered inappropriate in public

Medications:   The exact same medicine may not be available, but alternatives will be.

Food:    LOTS of vegetarians here,  many vegetarian restaraunts.  Not a problem

Baseball:   Little league has a long season here.   American School has several adult softball teams.   Season just concluded.

Skype works here  as well as Vonage

Buying a car is usually cheaper/a better deal in my opinion based on you saying you will be here about 3 years.   Be sure to look into that further on your look-around.

Re medication

When you come for your look see visit go to a pharmacy such as the one in City Centre and ask if your medications are available in Qatar. MANY ARE NOT. eg no codeine is sold here even small doses mixed with paracetamol which are free available elsewhere. But then other medication which you seriousely meed a prescription elsewhere are freely available over the counter. So bring in your supplies.

For anybody who uses HRT patches please note they are not available in this country!!

I'm not yet in Qatar, going for my "look see trip" in next two weeks, but from spending a lot of hours reading up on Doha, talking to ppl that came back from there and reading this websites forums; well here goes:

For your cats & food: there are vets here and organisations for pet care > try search for Dohavets and Doha pet relocators in Qatarliving.com.

Dress for women:  I am told shoulder and knees covered with nothing to tight fitting will do.

Medication: Can't help there, maybe you can get generetic medicine for those same brands you can't get in Doha.  Consult with your doctor before you come and then you can check all the brands available there.

Food:  Meat's expensive.  So on your diet you could save

Car: To lease is expensive - lease amount > can't help there. Better to buy it new and sell it within the 3 years(My opinion).  Everythings neg. as long as there's no specific price tag on it.

Skype: Yes you can, but use MSN as backup.

Baseball:  There's clubs around, but some with waiting list I'm told.  If they have this sport, I'm not sure.  I'm a rugby fan

Good luck!

All cats here MUST live in dustbins and get their own food

Pain relief is available from the booze souq

Playing baseball is banned just in case you get a pinata and have a party

We eat only meat...camel on Fridays

Phrophalatics available just shout 'DUREX' in supermarket

Talking to your Mother is banned because they only screw you up.

modest dress for women means respectful cloths not wearing shorts or strapless tops

short sleeves shirts will be acceptable but should cover the sixy part ie breast
