Assistance on regs around importing my car

Hi,
I am about to relocate to Doha from Riyadh at the end of February. I am battling to get some consistency in what the regulations are around importing my car. Perhaps someone out there knows the answers to these queries or can point me to an official site where I can get them?

1. What is the maximum age of the car allowed to be? Some info suggests that the maximum age of the car is 5 years, others say 3. Which is it?
2. Does Qatar allow this on a Visa with a grace period to allow the Qatar Residence Permit to be obtained. I understand that this can take a month from arrival. I understand I have a grace period on my licence and was hoping I could get the same on the vehicle reregistration.
3. The car is for personal use. Is there any customs duty payable? I have heard 0% and I have heard 5%. Does anyone know this?

Regards

I have the same situation "almost" .. im leaving Jeddah moving to Qatar, final exit Saudi visa, going home to Amman "June" to get my Qatari visa then moving to Qatar "August" .. looking 4 some advice on importing my personal Mazda cx-9 2009.

---->what is the procedure in Qatar? required documents and stuff.

------> how can i ship my car from Jeddah while i'm in Amman? (there is a month off between leaving the kingdom and moving to Qatar).

Simon .. ideas about the shipping companies?

Thanks all.

Just had an email with some useful contact info if you want to follow it up:

Ministry of Interior in Qatar website - Contacts

http://www.moi.gov.qa/site/english/contactDept/index.html

Lists telephone numbers and email for the Traffic Dept. Just rang them and apparently my 2001 motor shouldn't be a problem to import into Qatar.

Simon - hopefully if someone can provide a concrete answer regarding maximum age of a car imported in Qatar, then I know, but certainly the max looks like a five year old car, so maybe I've gotta sell!

Let's see what else this post throws up. I am hoping to get some real info on the rules around this which appear a touch fuzzy. It can be done but my guess is older than 5 years will not work, and that appears to be GCC wide. My concern is that Qatar may be stricter which is where the 3 year rule is coming from. The import duty should be simpler but also requires clarification.

Daisie....

I was hoping to import my car also from Riyadh to Doha, but the problem is that it's a 2001 model, so nearly ten years old. Would this not be allowed?

Thanks for info and sorry for hi-jacking the thread, but seems daft to start a new one!

Cheers.

Sound advice although not usable in my case.

Will work the Wasta angle.

Sorry no. As I said, I didn't import it. Also meant I was immune from tickets :o)

Spanner in the works. I heard 4 years!

You can drive for some time on export plates, but not sure how long. Check with KSA police when you get them.

I managed to drive for 2 years on KSA plates but I had Wasta and sold the car back in KSA :o)
