2 year contract passport will expire in 18 mo
My wife and I have been offered 2 year contracts at an International School in Doha. I am a New Zealander and my wife is Chinese with New Zealand Permanenet Residency. We live in China. My question is will my wife need to renew her passport before coming to Qatar? If she accepts a 2 year contract is it permissible to have only 18 months left on her current passport. Chinese nationals must renew passports every five years which is why this is an issue.
My sister had the same trouble with her American husband bringing her over but what they did is they had the marriage certificate translated into arabic with authentication before they re apply for a visa. don't ask any dumb ass wife here they don't even know how the processing goes. especially with chinese they are being strict giving them visas nowadays as there are lots of prostitution going on. sorry for the words but that must be one of the reason they are screening chinese applications and limiting who are coming over to Doha. I worked at the Military base and I happened to know this cases.
Good luck.
It's so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid, then don't say it.

Dear DC-Jaz,
There are many reasons she may have been denied. You never know from day, to day in Qatar what the Ministry has in mind. Most couples have one partner who is the "primary" sponsored staff member. The 2nd spouse (usually the woman) is typically under her husband's sponsorship. It is sexist but that is the way it is here. Once you are here your company's immigration officer should be able to get her under your sponsorship.
If she applied on her own, being Chinese could be the reason she was denied by the "authorities." It is really hard to tell. You should be in consultation with your school's immigration specialist about how to get her an RP once you're settled.
Good luck!
Well my wife had her visa application declined for a third and final time. I have been advised that I can come to Qatar and wait for my Resident Permit (approximately 2 weeks???). As soon as I have this my wife can come under my sponsorship. Does this sound right or have I missed something?
Thanks for the replies. She is not required to be in Qatar under my sponorship as she has secured a position herself. Fingers crossed we get some positive news soon.
It will have to do with the fact that your passports are from different countries, while the intricate workings of sponsorship laws here change frequently, to the point where the immigration office would seem to not what was happening half the time, the way your sponsorship works is something like this, your company applies for allocations from immigration according to what their requirements are, for instance, 10- New Zealand - Male - Educational Instructors, by them giving you a visa under this title they use up one of these allocations, for your family to go under this they also then have to be a holder of a NZ passport, as the allocation is for NZ's only, this is why she is required to go on a seperate visa if what you say is true and she has a job then her visa shouldn't be a problem unless it is a condition of her contract that she must be under husbands sponsorship. All this said their are people here were husband and wife do have different nationality passports and the wife is under the husbands sponsorship, but again it comes down to when you apply and the rules at the time.
DC-Jaz ... the usual route that i know ... Normally husband come first, settle down and get his RP. Then he sponsor the wife to apply the RP.
I know husband need minimum income to entitle sponsoring the wife , but i guess your wages would be way pass the minimum requirement.
Apparently they did not even want the marriage certificate. She has to apply on her own accord and the fact she is married was considered irrelevant. I'm wondering if its a "she's Chinese" issue.
DC Jaz ... i cant see any reason why they decline your wife's visa. Normally wife always under husband's sponsorship as far as everything in order such as marriage certificates.
My wife had her visa declined for some reason so we are now reapplying. Should there be any issue for a Chinese national, married and with permananet residency in New Zealand, with a job offer, to be declined a working visa in Qatar?
Thanks for the reply - greatly appreciated!
No problem . Once her visa is stamped here with Reisdent permit , she can go to China embassy here for passport renewal just before expiry . There is no issue at all .
