Victims of Car Accidents Pay 50% of

Translator
By Translator

Only in Qatar? I was involved in a car accident, police report indicated that I was the victim, not the cause.

Upon talking to the insurance company of the other car, they told me I have to pay 50% of the cost of replacement part if I choose for brand new pieces. Or, I can choose used parts at no cost.

Well, for my car model and year 2004, the repair shop tells me that he could not find any used parts, and I now I hane no choice other than paying QR3000 as 50% of the cost of new parts.

Anyone gone through this episodes lately? is this legal?

if this is a rented car - ensure that they have fully comp insurance... we hired a car with (apparently) only 3rd party insurance! only in Doha ;o)

Hire cars: if the accident is not your fault you pay nothing. If the accident is your fault you pay the excess established in the rental agreement you signed + 110 Riyals for the police report.

Had the same issue is Saudi Arabia... Can't do much about it. The only way is to stpulate "new parts" when taking out insurance, but then the policy will be more expensive.

And what happens if it is a rented or leased to own car? In case of an accident does the leasing company ask from you to compensate for this 50% or is it already covered in the leasing agreement? (i really don't see any clause about this, it just says the first party will insure the car with full cover insurance).

Anyone got a clue about this?

I've got a dent in my front bumper, courtesy of someone else. Since I don't know the person, it's my fault. Let's see what the insurance company says.

you guys are freaking me out....

I was in a car accident after Emir's cup final. Got squashed (literally) between a lorry and a massive 4 by 4 on the roundabout (I was in a middle lane, and they both decided to change lanes without checking mirrors of course). Now, the police is saying this is my fault, because the front of my car was crossing the lane between the middle and the inside lane... of course it was coz the back of my car was pushed by lorry, while 4WD was pushing the front of it (scary experience by the way!)

There are no parts to be replaced in any of the cars, just a dent in the side and front of my car, and some minor scratches in the 4WD side. Now.... will I have to pay for all the repairs, or is it just parts I would have to pay?

I don't believe I will argue out of this, as the other two guys speak Arabic, and I have no clue what they are saying.... and I was told that I cannot win when a Qatari national was involved in an accident.

The issue is not what is the insurance depreciation schedule. For that you can just throw your 'comprehensive' away and stick with the compulsary 3rd party.

For me it is more on the fact that you will have to pay for the repair of your car even though you are clearly not at fault. Strange, really....

... the minimum the insurance company will charge you for fully compreensive insurance is 1,510 QAR (even if that is more than the 4% of value of the vehicle). Note that a fully compreensive insurance does NOT include passengers, ONLY the driver. I paid an additional 300 QAR to insure 4 passengers in the car.

RIP-OFF!!!

Even if its minor the Victim has a lot of hassle

- going to insurance

- going to police

- going to garage

and possibly hiring a car while yours is being fixed.

Its massively inconvenient and at some stage it will cost you money.

I got hit a couple of years back by an idiot on a mobile who crashed into the cars that were waiting at the traffic lights.

Luckily i had a friend who could lend me a car

Fully compreensive insurance applies as I posted above. If you go to the repairshop for original parts you will be charged according to those rates. A real rip-off!

I have Arabia Insurance and their tier goes:

New Car: No fee

1 Year: 20%

2 Year: 30%

3 Year: 40%

4 Year: 50%

I think this is absolute robbery! Most cars that are only a year old still look (and smell) as if they were off the showroom floor. Who in the world came up with the idea that a one year old vehicle's parts depreciate by 20%!??? Its absurd. My 4 year old BMW still looks fairly new, but on paper the parts are only worth half price? No where else in the world would you put up with garbage like this.

I could imagine a devaluing of parts in increments beyond 5 years, but a 1 year old vehicle deserves new parts.. no questions asked.

By Alumnar• 21 Mar 2010 21:04

... so why should we pay anything when the car is more then 1 year old? What is the point here of having fully compreensive insurance?

Thats the case with Third Party Insurance almost all over the world. Nothing new about it.

It goes like:

Brand New Car : No charges for Spare Parts.

1 Year Old Car : 10% of Spare Parts.

2 Years Old Car: 20% of Spare Parts.

3 Years Old Car: 30% of Spare Parts.

4 Years Old Car: 40% of Spare Parts.

5 Years Old Car: 50% of Spare Parts.

Onwards, no more deduction than 50% of the Spare Parts.

... the repairs are paid in full by the insurance. From then onwards, if it is your fault, the above percentages I posted apply.

So much for fully compreensive insurance...

I dont know about you guys but last year I had an accident. The police report says that I was on fault although I wasn't but this is not what I want to discuss here.

Actually I want to tell that as per my insurance policy I only had to pay 800 riyals and everything access 800 was paid by my comprehensive insurance. The total cost of repairing my car was more than 10,000. As the car was still in its first year of use so they paid the full amount in access of amount mentioned on my policy which was 800. Anything below 800 is not covered.

If what you guys are saying is true then being guilty is better than being a victum :P

hi, i have just found that out as well. I thought when i bought fully comprehensive thats what it meant, unfortunately thtas not what it means. What is the point of fully comp insurance if you are going to pay 50%....rip off

i agree with kimd's point...if this "paying 50% of the total cost".. is really the "legal" thing at the moment and being used by the insurance co., then it must be reviewed and changed.. it is time that "legal" should also mean "fair".

... that the amount is 50% of the repair costs for 1-year-old cars, 40% for 2-year-old cars, 30% for 3-year-old cars and that the amount then stays 30% no matter how old the car.

Fully compreensive insurance - yeah sure. What a place!

It might be legal but it's not fair. Why should you pay for something that wasn't your fault. The driver that caused the accident should pay from his pocket.I had the same experience a couple of years ago and I refused to pay for a new side mirror, the insurance company had to pay for it in the end.The accident wasn't my fault so why should I have been out of pocket, it was enough that my car was off the road for a few days which caused me inconvenience. It's about time that insurance premiums are linked to the driver's road safety and driving record- you drive safely without violations then your insurance will be cheap but if you cause accidents or get penalty points on your licence then you should pay more insurance.
