A friend uses yahoo all the time and likes it. I've used it a few times and it was fine. Not too expensive and easy to set up. Skype pissed me off when they cancelled my account because I hadn't used it in 6 months. They claimed that they warned me but the only email I ever got from them was the one cancelling my account.

I got bitter, threw a fit and went elsewhere...

I have been using skype for ages. A week before I tried lowrateVoIP, Call quality is not good at all. I feel they are charging more than what they claim.

Anyways, I will not continue lowrateviop, next try will be Yahoo, if that doesn't work, I will stick to Skype.

There's another programme like skype called low rate voip which is free to call landlines anywhere in the world as far as I know. I think they charge a bit to call mobiles. You can download it from www.lowratevoip.com It's also free to talk to other skype users when they're online using their skype id instead of a phone number and if you have a webcam you can even make video calls.

Yahoo Messenger with voice (version 8).... is better than Skype. Skpye uses a lot of Bandwidth & keeps on using your bandwidth after your call (to route other calls through your PC) unless you shut down (Exit) Skype - which is wrong as they are using your software without your notice.

The cost of Skype & Vonage are higher when compared to Yahoo Messenger.

You can use Yahoo Messenger over a dial-up line also while it is almost impossible to estabilish a good ongoing conversation with Skype over Dial-up internet connection.

The advantage with Skype is its ability to "conference calls" & to get an incomming call Number (Phone to PC - A guy dials a special no on his phone & connects to you & he gets the local charge while you have to pay the skype charge which would be almost equaly to the local call). Which is a little advanced.

So guys take your choice....

All long distance calls outside of Qatar are expensive, local calls are practically free (I stand to be corrected on this but think they are indeed free).

Better to get hold of a skype phone and create an account (skype out/in) to host such calls.

By that comment, should I assume telephone costs are expensive?

(I am moving to Qatar this June)

Yep, Qtel did try to ban it for a while as it was undermining there ability to squeeze every last penny out of you but that was soon lifted.
