Running in Qatar?

Hi

I am probably moving to Qatar very soon. And I am very excited about it, so I am researching as much as I can.
Where I live now I run/jog to keep fit. It is accepted socially to run in Qatar/Doha? On the Chorniche for example? Or is it very weird/unacceptable for me to run outside?

thanks in advance for any comments

Thomas,

Running on the corniche is certainly nice, providing the weather is cooperative and probably provides the longest stretch of traffic-free running in all of Qatar. They are starting to develop more green space and walking/jogging paths elsewhere in the city in an attempt to beautify Doha before the Asian games in December, but they are still scarce.

We currently live off C-Ring near Najma street and there is a short stretch there near The Mall which is nice for walking or jogging. We have a German shepherd mix, and if I'm taking him for a long walk then I usually end up along this stretch. I've never taken the dog out to the Corniche though, since many of the locals and non-Western expats are terrified of all dogs.

Xena, I'm not aware of any dog training club, but that doesn't mean there isn't one here. I am still a curiosity when I walk the dog. In the year plus that we've been here, I've probably seen less than 10 other dogs, but I'm sure there are many dogs living behind compound walls that go unseen.

I've seen some athletes training on the long island stretches that divide roads (these are usually lush green grass running for down main roads).

I must warn you though...you ain't going to be running no where but on a threadmill during summer!

running ouside the corniche won't be at all fun.. actually it's unusual to see people walking in the streets here in Doha ..lot's of streets don't even have side walks and the pavements don't have space for people to walk on ...wearing shorts and sleeveless t-shirt is ok specially with the nice warm winter we have here ... u can wear anything u want it's ok...UNLESS Thomas u r a hot girl then u'll be in big trouble ;)

Hi Thomas,

You asked the question I was about to ask.... so thanks for getting the heads up.....

Except... I will be bringing my one German Shepherd with me, and will want to run him daily..... would I be able to do this on El Cornishe?

Where else would I be able to take Anex? He is very sociable, well trained and loves people....

Here is S A, dogs are allowed in Shopping Complexes, and at restuarants if they have a outside patio/verandah.

I also train dogs..... does anyone know if there is a dog training club in Doha? If not, maybe I can start one..... it normally turns out to be a very social club and people from all walks become linked by their love for their animals.

ok - that sounds great.

And outside of the Corniche? If I watch out for traffic?

And do you mean it is also ok for me to just wear shorts and a sleeveless t-shirt ?

Running on the Corniche is great....lots of people do it. There is a bit of a sports frenzy here now due to the Asian games so you won't feel out of place at all.
