I am gonna ask something that has been previously discussed but I need to satisfy my curiousity.... pls try n help.

Got an offer from QP, Ras Laffan (Grade 13) Basic -11k & other allowances (traveling, accom, etc) - 10k.

Planning to come alone first, stay in Doha and travel to Ras Laffan daily. Can you guys tell if i got a good deal or should i think twice??? Really appreciate your advice:)

TQ.

I find it difficult to swallow some of the advice on this board? A base QR35k Salary/Month for living in Qatar?

That is ludicrous! In the US, that would amount to a mind boggling $115,000 P/Anum... guess what.. that is $5,000 more than what a pediatrician makes, $12,000 more than what an average litigant lawyer makes and $36,100 more than what an average Electrical Engineer makes. And wait.. Life in the US is considerably more costly than living in Qatar. You can ask me, I lived in "taxachusetts" where 23% of my earnings went to taxes last year ALONE .. (thats $9,200 less my meager $40k salary)

That means that approximatley 3,000 QR is taken out of my savings a month!

Yes, rent hikes are horrendous here, but most reputable companies provide accommodation packages, a relatively alien concept to Western corporations.

Take my advice with a grain of salt, but don't expect a

QR 29,000/month salary on a single income UNLESS YOU PLAN on being executives.. a highly unlikely prospect for the 90% of us on this board!

Salam

Mo.

there is no career development in QP ... once you work in a position, very very slight chance you will get promoted. QP ok if you are on the way to retirement ... but dont come here to improve your knowledge or job skill.

This confirms what others have said. I can tell you now that you will not get "free" education from QP. They will pay a % of the fees at a school for Malaysian nationals (if one exists).

Career development doesn't happen for non Qatari staff. Occasionally you may be sent on a local course. Development is for national staff only.

Considering you're provided with accommodation in Ras laffan, you're left with only QAR 11 k Basic salary.

Even though the Basic salary offered is 2x than what you're currently earning, you have to consider the following :

1. Costs of food is 2 to 3X than price back home

2. There is no EPF contribution by Employer here.

3. If you plan to bring your kids later, please take note that education is super expensive here. QP will only reimburse you based on fees at Middle East International School (MEIS) which is only about 2/3 fees at other schools. It's not recommended for you to send your kids to MEIS for various reasons.

4. Exchange rate is worsening as RM is strengthening. Whatever amount you earn in QAR here, you'll get about 93 % of that amount in RM term.

5. More and more Malaysians are leaving this country for some reasons or another. Will share the sad stories with you in private.

6. If you're talking about career development here, there is ZERO. Don't expect any promotion. Chances to attend courses is also almost ZERO. Not much new things you will learn here. Your knowledge that you bring along with you will be exhausted over time.

Sounds like in relation to your circumstances this is a very good offer.

But I add for anyone from Europe/USA/NZ AUS

You need a minimum 15-20K a month PLUS all housing paid for and flights and schooling to even consider coming here.

Any less it is NOT worth it. Total packages from these countries should START at 35K 20K wages 15K minimum for housing.

Cheers

Thanks guys for the advice....

Actually, QP's terms include free education for my kids, however, I m planning to come alone first. I m Malaysian and the money offered is double than what I m earning now. I am keen to take up the offer as I feel it will be good for my career development.

Hope that things will fall in place.... I need your words of advice... Anyone in QP now who could share a thought or two... Really appreciate it... TQ guys:)

Within an 18 month period in the early 80's the rate swung from QR7 =£1, to QR3.8 =£1 to QR8 = £1. Roll the dice

at the moment we survive here but not making savings in the UK, no idea how long we will last here.

5 yrs ago the exchange was 1 pound to 5 qatari riyal ... not is over 7 riyal to the pound. So it is like 20 percents less pay for my husband.

Ras Laffan is far ... 90 kms one way ... pls consider your travelling time when y ou go to work. But if you come to Qatar with family and living in Ras Laffan it would be a total boredom for your wife ... nothing in Ras Laffan, totally dead place for family.

Depends on what your nationality is.

If you are indian/asian this is a fantastic offer

If you are European you had better stay at home, unless you are desperate for a job. Recent survey indicated that expats require a minimum of QR29000 monthly just to survive here without making any savings. If you send monies back to Europe you will get a lousy exchange rate, making your life here more miserable. DYOR and think very carefully before comming. The world is a big place, there are better places and certanly better companies to work for.

Totally agree with Bhappy's comments. Rents in Doha are high and most people working in Ras Laffan prefer to stay there. QP has a lot of accommodation, just insist on them to provide you with accommodation, their accommodation is often of a high standard than the one you may be able to find yourself with the budget that you have stated. The total package is not too bad if you do not have any children. If you have children then if the school fees are not paid for then this could prove costly.

is the starting package for grade 13. What you should avoid to do is to live in Doha and travel to RAS LAFFAN. The rents in Doha are very high and it will not make any sense for you to stay in Doha. If QP gives you residence in Ras Laffan, then grab it as you will be much better off there
