Nationality/Ethnicity

Salaams and hi!

I joined Qatar Living about a week ago and have been reading as much as I can about the place I may be calling home in a few months.

One thing that I noticed is that it appears salaries and benefits are often based on a person's nationality instead of their work experience. Is this true? Does that mean if A is from Uganda and B is from Australia, B may get a better package?

Are people treated differently based on their ethnicity?

I am a born and raised Canadian who only speaks English (and I only say "eh" when I'm reciting the alphabet), Muslim, my parents are Pakistani, I don't look Pakistani, I have an Arabic first name, and I'll be working for an American company.

Am I going to get the same package as everyone else? Am I going to be looked at and treated as a Canadian or a Muslim or a Pakistani or a woman?

Thoughts?

I believe, naively perhaps, that your salary reflects the country of your education.

What you have said is true, everything here is mostly racist and when it comes to salaries its your passport speaks not your experience. That speaks how un professional these people are. If you want to waste your professional life welcome to qatar. But if your going to work for an american company then maybe you will get a good deal.

But dont waste your time here for long. Having an american, aussie etc passport is better then being a person here!

Good luck anyway

welcome to qatar :) it depends on who acutally runs and owns the company you work for - if it is american i would say you are ok. qatari? then yes nationality determines not only your salary and how you are treated. good luck!
