Moving to Doha Qatar in Mar 2013

Hello QL'ers,

I am moving to Doha in Mar 2013 from UK. Just checking on few things like cost of living, British Curriculum Schools (I have been to most of them but only got response from NBS for my kids), Preparations etc. I have lived earlier in 2008/09 for a short period but I am sure things might have changed since then. Appreciate if you could help me understand on the above headings. Also if you could put some lines on cost of basic amenities like rents, utilities, transportation etc for a decent living.

Thanks a mil.

all I can say is petrol is only the cheapest.because if i compare the amount of goods here, in my country (Phil's)..its almost the same..sometimes much higher price and also the traffic rules and fine for the violators is too much strict and expensive..

...just moved here myself with my family, though my husband has been here since Jan.

My kids go to NBS - if you can get over the Registrar being off with you whenever you speak to her, then the education is Brit Curr. And my children (Reception and Yr5) LOVE it. Ok, the facilities aren't as good as a lot of other schools but this is down to the owners of the school itself who won't pay out to upgrade facilities. Typical really! My eldest is getting on much better than he did in the UK school he went to, a testimony to his current teacher.

Villa wise, you will be very lucky to get Ne for 10,000QR if you are wanting to live in Doha. Yes, this can be achieved if you go to the outskirts or if you come to our compound (where we WERE lucky and DID get one for 10,000QR though this was after a lot of searching.) Most villas we have come across are between 12,000QR upwards.

If you want anymore information, inbox me and I'll send you my email address!

Hope this helps.

Schools are by far your biggest challenge - most people wait over a year to get their kids into a 1/2 decent school

I don't think Doha has changed much since 2008/9 with respect to cost of living. A two-bedroom unfurnished apartment will cost around QR 6000 per month while a villa will be around 10000. Water and power charges will be extra. As for transportation you can buy your own car, hire a taxi, or use the bus service.
