Marlboros are now 7QR a pack!?! WTF?!?

AwesomeRami
By AwesomeRami

Packs of Marlboros have increased in price today from 6QR to 7QR. What a disaster.

The last price increase was in 2006 and it was a 50 dirham increase. Now we're being charged an extra riyal? This is devastating news for smokers.

It's bad enough that i have to drive by 10 corner shops before i can find one that sells smokes but now i have to pay extra? Shda3wa!?!?

So for all the "Yay, this will curb public smoking" - it won't. And for all the "it's only a riyal" note this: I love to smoke. I love my cigarettes and this price increase is a huge blow in the faces of the hundreds of thousands of smokers in this country.

Screw them if they think this is going to stop us smoker...hmmm i wonder if they increased the price of Davidoffs too? Oh and to all you smoker haters out there i'm warning you WE WILL kill you slowly :P

I checked a packet of Marlboro from a friend. They said it was imported from the UAE...hence it's the UAE who's 'possibly' increased the price. The packet has an Arabic writing meant to be sold in the Middle East.

AwesomeRami and all other smokers and non smokers, i guess u waste a lot of ur time dicussing this issue, Rami, if u r really smoker, u'll keep paying to get what u love and keep plaming urself everytime u bought a back that u couldn't be a man enough to quit, i'm doing the same my self, so either pay and keep quite, or stop it and make them lose the huge money that u waste on ur *puff*

regarding the poor african kids, u should calculate the total amount that u spend, not only the raised 1Qr. also if they decide to cut that Riyal will u save it for the african kids??

Asking the wrong person here. I think that passive smoking is made up. If we are to believe academics the harmful stuff has already entered our blood streams/body before it’s puffed out, that is just smoke as in evaporation.

No I don’t think there is global warming; I think that is called evolution

get over it or quit. i'd have more sympathy if there weren't so many a-hole smokers lighting up in malls and other areas where they shouldn't.

People over here gripe about smoking and then go and drive like idiots rofl.

More people over here die through car accidents than smoking.

And you the starter of the thread; get a grip it is 1 Riyal. In England one pack of 20 costs 40 Riyals.

And to all those that have slagged off smoking, do you know what, if I/we knew you I/we could judge at least ONE area of your life that I/we could not agree with.

So please, leave us alone. We do not encourage you to smoke, so please do not presume you have the right to stop us.

Oh by the way, Google passive smoking, it does not exist according to recent experts.

So what's the reason behind the price increase? And is it across the board - i.e. all cigarette brands in all stores and supermarkets?

By britexpat• 3 Mar 2009 19:30

The average labourer on low wage is more concerned about sending maxi,um amount home and will forego luxuries such as Marlboros. He will probably buy a "biree" (Indian roll ups)

By AwesomeRami• 3 Mar 2009 19:24
AwesomeRami

Intelligent, I'm very honored that you have the best interests of the addicted smokers in mind.

Unfortunately, the big elites who control everything don't care about our health and only care about making money.

And supporting this needless price increase (for any reason, no matter how noble) is giving in to "the man" and allowing them to control us even further.

I am fully aware that there are many things in our society that have increased in cost that are more important than smokes(rent, food etc..). But cigarettes are outside of the spectrum of necessary items to sustain life. They are a pork item. The demand never changes.

So if we can live without cigs, then they are not a direct effector on our economy or our quality of life. Then changing their price will not affect either of the two aforementioned - then what's the only reasoning behind the price increase? Greed.

By Intelligent• 3 Mar 2009 19:11

I hope it goes up by another couple of riyals. And addicts will get a chance to enjoy there life by smoking less and living healthy life for couple of more years. I hope you smokers dont develop this throat cancer coz recently one of my uncle died of it. He was a chain smoker too.

Peace

You're absolutely right Mandilulur. It seems no one appreciates my Awesomeness... and my love for cigarettes.

its good news that the prices have gone up, good for the companies and government. It would definitely not affect the smokers because they are not "quitters",

There is no way that i am overreacting. There are kids in Africa who don't even have the luxury of smoking - and i have to pay an extra:

i) 5 dirhams per cigarette - which means

ii) 1 riyal extra per pack - which if i smoke a pack a day means -

iii) I'm paying an extra 365QR per year - which finally means

iv) 60 packs of smokes that I'm losing out on per year!!

devastating!

What about the kids in Africa!?!?!

By Hasan Shaikh• 3 Mar 2009 18:12

Dear AwesomeRami. Gasoline is a necessity. Its price influences the price of every commodity of daily use. Cigarettes are a luxury. That is why the only outrage you see, is created here by you. You are over reacting by miles.

On the other hand, all prices go up here.. why the cigarettes should be exception?? It’s only 16%.
