I tried searching! :-(

I tried "searching" but couldn't find an answer, so don't you all gang up on me! :-)

I was wondering about landline and cell phone services. I have gathered there is just one company that provides the landline service, and it is approximately 33R/month for basic service. Calling from landline to landline is free, but landline to cell are not.

What about cell phone providers? Are there different companies with different plans available? I'm used to paying $30/month (Canadian) for unlimited evening/weekends, text messages, voice mail, call waiting, caller ID.

Should I get a Vonage phone here in Canada so I can call home and not be charged long distance, and just bring the adapter with me. And get a landline when I'm in Doha for local calls, and then a cell phone for when I'm out and about? Do I need 3 phones?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

:-)

Try using Skype for out of country calls..signing up for an account is free and all computer to computer calls are free..If you want to call cell/landline phones with your computor using skype you can get an account set up for as low as $10 and it will be an auto. withdrawl per call. I have made several calls to USA and I still have not gone below $8 in my account..Good Luck!

Vodafone will be launching its services in Qatar effective 1st March 2009. Perhaps the airtime rates may go down. Stay tuned.

What does the population of the country has to do with the phone rates now?? In moscow there are 12-13 mln...do they pay less than in Qatar??? In Great Toronto Area there are about 2 mln.. do they pay 5-6 times more than in Moscow? omg.. where do people come with such nonsense, I don’t know..

Bella, there are no plans here like in Canada. Pay as much as you talk. And rates are extortionate. Forget about unlimited evenings and weekends… you will pay for every single second, even more.. they charge you for the FULL minute, not per seconds…

there is only Q-Tel here, that's why the rates are so high.

Dear you have to note that only 1,4 milion people are living in Qatar, not like canada,so fees should be diffrent,a telecom company serving 1,4 milion is diffrent than the one have many millions,at all, hereyou can use Dawly international cards,it's a prepaid cards you can use from landline, one minute to canada after 7PM is only 1 QR,and at peak time at 1,5 Qr otherwise you have to wait the next company, even we don't know plans about new prices!!!
