Housing, post-Asian Games

Hello everyone,

Would this mean that once the Games are over, the housing bubble would burst? and the prices will come tumbling down? there will be lots of vacancies and those poor souls, fresh off the boat, who had signed ridiculously expensive leases, 2 or 3 months before the Games, will get a cheque in the mail...?

I agree, ask QP what furnished housing means. It could be hard furnishing only or they could also be including some soft furnishings (curtains etc). make sure and ask. They used to have an inventory list of items provided.

Why don't you ask QP what furnished housing means? If you can't have a relationship before you are hired that provides answers, heaven help you after you are here and hired.

The athletes’ village will be used for the accommodation of nurses and junior hospital staff after the Asian Games.

Prices will not fall after the games, they will simply stabilise. However, there is still a huge demand for housing in the oil and gas sectors, with experts citing the need for housing a further 100,000 employees over the next five years.

Hi,

Can anyone tell me what does it mean when QP says it will offer a furnished accommodation on family status? Does it mean all required furnitures,(sofa, bed, dinning table sets), curtains, utensils etc. will be provided by the company? As I would be moving to Qatar next month I am enquiring on the matter.

I don't want to burst your bubble, but I think that, techniclly, your landlord can force you to move out, even with your two year contract.

I don't know if the "two year, 10% rent rise cap" law has changed this, but if not, your landlord can inform you that he requires the villa for his primary residence, or that of an immediate family member, and you have no option but to move.

Call me a cynic, but you may find a week after you move out, it appears back on the market at double the rent.....

The Athlete's Village will not be knocked down after the games - that's just silly.... maybe some remodelling to make it integrate effectively for its new purpose... but really... don't people try to at least make rumours realistic these days...?? sheesh

Thanks God my contract in Qatar is off when WAG are off :) , I'm sure the rent will not decrease next year , too many companies are paying what the landlords are asking....no way...

I was in Sydney during the Olympics and let me tell you prices will not drop they will just plateau for a couple of years. All the difference will be is that the increases in rent will not be as extreme as it has for the past year and a half.

In terms of compounds being knocked down, you will find that more and more within the city area will be knocked down eventually and apartments will be built as the landlords can get more money from apartments or even offices than compounds.

Knocking down the Asian Games Village!! My goodness- unbelievable! We came to Doha when rent prices were on the rise and we secured our Villa at a great price. We now find out our compound will be knocked down too!! We are now looking for a place to live and don't know if we can stay in Doha due to the ridiculous rent prices- not everyones companies are matching the increases!

I am surprised that the athletes village is to be destroyed after all the fuss relative to destrying the Falcon Club and Al-Ahli compound.

It was intended that the facility be taken over by the HMC for use as accommodation by medical staff and for staff attending a proposed Teaching Hospital (possibly the Hamad).

The specification for the rooms and other facilities etc are very good as they are in line with the HSC (Host City Contract) for the Asian Games.

Destroy Asian Game Village after Game ? Do you know the reason, Safeway ?

Anyhow, I don't think rent will drop after this Dec. There are new companies and staff come into Doha daily. People are desperate for a place to sleep. The rent might be stable after this Game but I don't put any hope that we will pay 5000QR instead of 7500 we are paying now. Luckly I have contract for 2 years so at least till Jan 2007, no landlord can come and break my xxxxs.

For answer no. 3 I meant that the landlords don't want to rent in low rate cause the next year they wont be able to increase more then 10%.

For example if he rent a villa for 7000 as he can't rent it for more like all the other landlords where they already rented their villas for 10000 so if next year the market will stay the same so he can't increase it more than 7700 as the law says, thats why they refuse to rent less than the market now even if the demand is low.

I was hoping you would say: yes, the Games brought additional pressure on the housing market and once they're over, there should be some relief, although i understand that new people are moving in every month, i also understand that new buildings are being built all the time.

Obviously the marketing strategy is to keep the supply always artificially shorter than the demand, so that prices will always be on the rise.

Sorry but, i don't understand your answer no 3. I thought landlords could increase rent annually anywhere between 0 and 10% max. So why are they afraid to rent : i don't get it.

Butterfly is somehow right but there are other factors could control the suitation such as:

1- The Landlords now are insisting on some high rates even if the properity stay without beeing rented for many months (how stupid).

2- There are many new companies relocating to Doha every month espcailly in the Gas field and services.

3- Again the Landlords afraid to rent in a low rate because of the new law (10% increament).

4- Still the demand is high and for example I can't find a flat for many of my clients and the prices going up.

5- I used to hear that the olympic village will be accomodated by Hamad hospital staff after the Asian Games and that should turn the real estate market updown, but recently I heared they are going to be destroy the village because of some reasons.

What I want to say is this market is not preductable.

Hi all,

I am considering relocation to Qatar from another country in Gulf. I will be there sometime in April. The Asian Games will start in Dec I presume.

If this assumption is correct that prices will tumble down after the Games, then is it advisable to make a rent contract only for 1 year or 8 months?

Advise me pls.

I think after the games prices will go down. Not because of the games themselves but because lots of houses and buildings that are under construccion now will be completed then. There's a shortage of accom at the moment. But I reckon by the end of 2006 offer will catch up with demand.

My opinion.
