Cost of Internet, Phone and other Utilities

Hi all, I am planning to move to Qatar for work with my wife. I have researched on house rentals, food and buying/renting a car, but I haven't given much thought for other type of expenses like internet and other utilities.

Can anyone give me a good estimate of what is the quality of internet is in Doha? Can you get high-speed internet packages (wired or wireless) without spending a lot? I'll be happy if I have internet quota of around 20 GB per month or more hopefully. How much will that cost?

A few of the rental ads I have seen so far include electricity, phone and water in the rent. I am wondering in case rent does not include it, how much should I budget per month as an estimate for electricity, phone and water considering usage for 2 people where Air-conditioning is going almost non-stop and calling within Qatar only (not more than 2-5 international calls per month by phone).

Also, can one get TV packages where you can see sports, movies, Indian and Pakistani TV channels in one package. How much should I budget for that?

Also, how much is mobile cost per month if one is using within Qatar only for calling and SMS, and not calling international numbers at all?

Thanks in anticipation

As per what you have stated Internet and telephone is the least of you worries.

The major expense you will occur will be grocery bills, house rent and weekly outings.

You may want to consider using satellite and internet-provided housing when making a decision. It's not just the cost savings but you won't have to wait months for your RP and installation. My hala card phone only costs me about $20 month. I can't download Youtube without major loading time-outs but I can Skype just fine.

Thanks for the info; it's very informative. So what you are saying is that if I pay 350 QAR per month, I can get unlimited internet at 2 MBPS? What can you do with 2 MBPS? Can you easily do video streaming, watch youtube and do video chat or you have to get higher speed like 4 MBps or 8 MBps? I know the above may be a basic silly question, but I dont really know much about internet speeds and computer stuff!

Also, for mobile, lets say I make 20 calls per month to other Qatari mobiles of average 5 minutes each, should I be paying around 100 QAR per month for that or higher or lesser?

Thanks so much for all the information.

Thanks so much both of you. To me, the QTel's residential package looks attractive with phone + mobile + internet all included for QAR 400 per month. I have a question though regarding this residential package.

Does paying 400 QAR per month means I get unlimited phone, mobile and internet? or I have to pay extra on top of this for calling people within Qatar. I know, off-course, I have to extra for international phone and mobile calls, but I will be using skype for that and not doing it via phone or mobile. Can anyone help me regarding the QTel's residential package? Can someone suggest a better package in terms of quality or price?

Cheers.
