it's that time of year when our family plans for our giving to charities. We are finding it difficult to find local charities that will accept a westerner's help. We are particularly interested in orphanages but any suggestions will be considered.
God bless you for your willingness for charity, inspite of everyone finding recession as an excuse for everything under the sky.
I have a suggestion.Rather than giving charity organisations, why dont you do one charitable act atleast a week like calling the less privileged over for a simple dinner, giving away warm clothes in winter or water during summer, telephone cards to your security, gardener or the maid, support a family genuinely in need, send something nice to the laundry and such boring workplaces near your home to cheer them up,etc.
Charity given to an organisation is impersonal and can risk being unaccounted.Children do get hands on experience in giving without feeling awkward .Spreading some cheer to those around you would help you be cheerful too, especially when being away from your home country and loved ones.ALL THE BEST!
There are many charities here. They usually have representatives in all the shopping malls, at these little tables usually near the entrance. I know of one of them at villagio has a whole list & pictures of kids (I believe in Africa) who for a small donation can get food/shelter/schooling/clothing. Also all these coupon books they have in front of them are for donations toward a certain country/cause. I give to them on a regular basis. Specially when I walk out with a shopping cart full of food.
QAWS unfortunately is not yet a recognized charity in Qatar (it's a long, complicated process from what I understand) and donations cannot be made directly to them YET.
However, if you visit one of the veterinary surgeries here in Doha - you can contribute to the medical care of strays by offering to offset vaccination fees, spaying/neutering costs etc.
I believe that these services are often done at cost rather than what people like me pay (and I'm willing to do it for the return I get from my furry friends) - but any riyal paid is welcomed as they often help look after QAWS animals, at a deficit until a benefactor comes along.
For myself, I contribute via the vet but I also buy things for the local construction guys - especially at this time of year. Fleece jackets and blankets to help them keep warm as well as a few "golf" shirts to wear on Fridays when they want to look smart out and about. It's not a lot - but it's money they won't spend on themselves if they can send it back home to their families. I like fleece because it washes well, keeps you warm and dries quickly.
If you want to help animals, there is another "charity".....basically there is a website set up on facebook, Dogs in doha and they work at rehoming dogs and cats. They have a huge vet bill at Qatar Vet Centre (opp Villiago), so you can donate there and help pay off the debt. This way you can be secure in the knowledge that your help is going straight to the animals
They also work in conjunction with rescue centres in the states to send dogs from here to great homes there. Unfortunately, alot of the time, the woman who runs dogs in doha pays for this out of her own pocket. So I can't speak on their behalf, but any help I know a dog somewhere will love it.

Every little bit helps.
